Starting to restore a safe

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Well, got the hinge as clean as it's gonna get since it is broken. More than clean enough to allow a copy to be made. Here it is from various angles. It actually looks better than it looks in the picture. My iPhone just doesn't do the hinge justice. :?

Had to use a flash for this picture due to the recessed portion. So the color sucks. (Well, so does composition, lighting, background, and every other metric. Oh well. ) But you can see the detail enough to get an idea.

And for size of this hinge. First, for the metrically inclined:

And for the metrically challanged

And since someone asked me to show it, yes... Honda really does have a rust penetrant spray. It also is a lube. Pretty decent product.

Gordon,

Going back to your Halls hinges, is the upper part of the hinge (the one with the receiver pointing down) secured to the door with just the three large screws visible from the outside or is it also attached with screws from the back. Mine is currently locked shut so I can remove the hinge (I assumed I only needed to remove the screws from the front).

Thanks.

David

Screws from the front and straight pegs on the back of the hinge.

Any ideas where I can get the hinges copied? I have been at a standstill for years as I can’t find a place that can copy the hinges (for a semi-reasonable price.

I don’t really know who can copy.

I’ve never done it but I may be able to make an impression in plaster of mine (at least the top part) once I have it off.

Hopefully someone chimes in on how best to make a copy of mine once it’s off.

I’ve also heard of 3D printing so I’m not sure about that.

I finally got the upper part of my hinge off and am having trouble removing the offset hinge pin. The patent suggests there is a retaining pin (see L & M, circled) but I don’t see where that is on my hinge.

Gordon - did you have to remove a pin to remove what was left of your hinge pin?
