Mosler Cannonball Safe (Parts Missing)

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Thank you. I'll bid on it.

As it was explained to me, the three locks are redundant. Not that I would only want one in there.

Personally, I can't see why you would want a time-lock at all
Isn't this going to be used as a personal safe?

I *think* he buys safes, restores them, and sells them.

Maybe because it looks nice? Just because it isn't going to be used doesn't mean it wouldn't be nice to have it complete.

Much to my wife's dismay, I have only bought and restored them. Never sold a safe (except for an old Brinks that I bought at Staples).

I would like to sell the 1,400 lbs Diebold you folks helped me with the old lock. But I haven't had much luck with that.

For all the work I plan to put into this safe, I would love to keep it. The issue I will no doubt face is how the heck I'm going to get it up the two steps into my office (which is one of the few places in my house built on slab and not 100 year old raised foundation). We'll cross that bridge when we get there.

I beat on the compartment with the mallet pictured below and opened the lower compartment.

There were two cranks, an extra handle, and a lot more rust.

Those movements came out a lot nicer than I expected. I would think a watchmaker could repair them?

I could use some help with the lower lock (Mosler 1 / Yale OC5).

One leg of the bolt is getting stuck on the channel it rides in. I sanded to clean it up but it almost seems bent.

Please see the attached video.

Although unrelated, Please also see the dent in the lock cover.

I plan in removing the wheel pack and pounding that dent out.

Given that the back cover was hit hard enough to break through the back cover it is plausible that the side was pushed in a bit. Take a straight edge and see if there is a gap.

Taking a guess, with those witness marks at 55 and the dial being set at a lower number, I think at least one wheel was slipping before

Well - that doesn't sound good but seems par for this course.

I think I have the lock cleaned up, greased, and back together.

A crescent wrench with some light pressure loosened up the top of the channel. Some well placed blows to the inside of the lock cover "fixed" the dent, and some careful metalwork got the cover true to the lock case.

Some before and after pictures of the tear down and end result.

I was the one who scratched wheel 3 at around 70.
I'll clean up the dial face and dial ring later.
I also noted in daylight that I scratched the dial with my channel locks so I may be looking for a new Mosler dial. It's not fatal but if I'm doing all this work,I might as well make the investment since the dial is one of the first things people look at.

There's a bidding war going on between two buyers and I'm not even bidding. What should I expect to pay for a potentially non-working movement?

You can try this guy... http://www.ebay.com/usr/barj78?_trksid=p2047675.l2559

personally know him, though I don't see him often. he gets a lot of the older safe stuff. contact him with what you are looking for.

IIRC I paid about $35 for this one. Not working unfortunately. If you want it I can send it to you for my cost plus shipping.

Squelchtone - I saw that but $150 for a movement seems a bit steep. TMI sells a serviced guaranteed to work movement for $200. I'm starting to wonder if billdeserthills is right about not needing a time lock. That and I'm having a terrible time getting the screws out of the back of the time lock case that is currently installed.

Averagejoe - PM sent.
