Got a safe to crack!

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Got a safe to crack!

I found this safe in the garbage at my apartment and luckily I also happened to run into the guy who threw it out who also had the code. Thing is the code is kind of messed up and he couldn't figure it out and nor can I. Here's a pic of the safe and the code. I'd like to get into this thing without breaking it since i'm pretty sure it's empty. If someone can help me get it open and it for some reason has thousands of dollars in it i'll split it 50/50 :P

Safe discussion is limited to the advanced section of the forum.

EDIT: it's been brought to my attention that I locked this too fast. OP is asking for help opening with a known combo, not in manipulation or safecracking, so I'm opening the thread up again for discussion specific to dialing the safe open.

I don't know alot of safes. But the last part.. Left to click.. I think you are missing the last number. You will most likely not hear a click, when hitting the last correct number..

But its only about a 100 numbers to try out, for the last number

It seems a bit odd that someone threw it out, you found it, found the original owner who gave you the combo...yet the owner isn't 100% sure it's empty...

How big is this safe? Is there a manufacturer's name on it? Is there a handle or key as well as the combo dial?

You may be missing one or two combo numbers.

How are you dialling - ie for 65 are you stopping on the third or fourth time?

Try starting by dialling four times L, then continue as your list. If nothing, try reversing all movements. If nothing, try dialling 4xR and stopping at 65 on the fourth, then 3xR to 25, then slowly to the L to see if it pulls the bolt.

It is critical that you stop at exactly the right numbers - even a fraction off and you have to start again.

If you are absolutely certain you have the correct code and turning sequence, try dialling the code but going 1 number down from the code, then 1 number up...continue for 2/3. Then try half numbers. The code may not have been set exactly right.

It looks like the first number is 0. So the combination would be 0-65-25. Turn 4 times to the right, stop at 0. Turn to the left (counter clockwise) past 65 twice, stopping at 65 the third time. Turn right (clockwise) past 25 once and stop at 25 the second time. Then turn left until the dial stops.

If the safe is being thrown away, there may be problems with it. As stated in the above post, you can try one number above and below each combination number.

Good luck,

Gordon

P.S. if you fill in your profile information, you may be surprised to find someone nearby who can help.

Duh...my eyes completely ignored that circle on the top of the paper. Gordon could well be right.

The complete story (as far as I understand) is that some guy in my apartment building got this safe from his ex boss along with a combo for whatever reason and since he couldn't figure out the combo himself he threw it out. Me being ever the treasure seeker had to immediately pick it up and bring it to my apartment but luckily I ran into the the guy who threw it out in the elevator and was able to get that combo which was written by the original owner presumably. I'd probably just break it open if I thought there was anything of value in it but since it's a nice big one and presumably the code should work, I'd definitely like to see if I can open it and still preserve it's function. Here's a pic of the safe with a cat on top of it for scale. I'm using it as a side table to put my coffee on for now.

Cat on top of safe pic is epic. You sir win the internet.

Try dialing this way please. I feel you will have better results this way, even though the lock on that safe does have flys that allow left right left OR right left right opening.

Turn the dial whichever way so that 0 is at high noon under the crows foot (opening index)

Now turn the dial LEFT and turn past 0 three times and stop on 0 the fourth time

Now turn the dial RIGHT and turn past 65 two times and stop on 65 the third time.

Now turn the dial LEFT and turn past 25 once and stop on 25 the second time.

Now turn the dial RIGHT until it stops at around 95, keep turning dial till it stops, or you hear click around 90 to 98.

If that all worked, turn the handle and open the door.

Let us know if it worked,

The instructions are reminiscent of the ones for my S&G combo lock. The four turns suggests that there should be four internal wheels and four numbers. It appears you have the first two numbers. The third and fourth numbers are missing. On my combo lock, the final number is always zero.

You might want to grab a pot of coffee and some treats for the cat, put in the first two numbers as written, then start putting in the third number starting with one and a fourth number of zero. (That may be what the zero on the top of the page means.) When it does not open, increment the number by one and try again. If you are lucky, you may get the safe open before the pot of coffee gets too cold.

True story: A few years ago I managed a self-storage in Tucson. Members of one family rented several of our larger lockers but after their adult son got busted for drug trafficking, they also rented one of our smallest lockers. One day several DEA agents showed up with a warrant to take whatever was in the small locker. I did a DE (not allowed to talk about that here) and watched as the agents opened the door. The contents appeared to be just a shipping pallet and a moving blanket, but when they pulled back the blanket there was a small safe. The agents took the safe with them and several weeks later I received a notice from the federal district court that I could file a claim for the contents of the safe, which were described as about $200,000 in cash plus another estimated $50,000 worth of jewelry. How I wish I would have known what was in there!

Open that safe. No telling what is in it.

Sorry I did not have the instructions from your picture in front of me as I posted the previous message. Ignore what I suggested

My new suggestion is
Turn the dial 4 times to the right to clear it and stop at zero
Turn the dial to the left stopping when you reach 65 the third time
Turn the dial to the right stopping when you reach 25 the second time
Turn the dial to the left slowly and try opening on each number until the safe opens or you reach 25

Thanks for the advice guys, unfortunately none of it worked. I'll keep playing with it and tell you all if I open it. Here's what i've tried so far

0-65-25 with the usual number of turns in the proper directions
0-4-65-25 going left 4 right 3 left 2 right 1 left to click (no click happened though)
25-65-0

I've also tried all the suggestions posted here.

And that may be why it was being tossed out. It may have other problems. It may just be the wrong combination.

From your pictures the safe looks too good to just toss out. You have a combination which may be wrong or maybe none of us can decipher the previous owner's instructions. From the photos it appears to be a Sargent & Greenleaf lock, which is fairly common.

I would take the safe and the instructions into a lock and safe specialty store and let them take a crack at it before just dumping it.

There is a round label or decal in the upper left of the door and a white card near the dial. What do these say?

Random thought: try dialing the combination to the change index (the smaller white mark at the 11 o'clock position), rather than the main index mark. It's not very likely... but perhaps whoever last changed the combination didn't do it properly?
