Hi everyone!
First post here... I must say that I've always been fascinated and intrigued by safe manipulation but never ever touched a safe. About a week ago, everything changed. I am in possession of an old Victor safe handed down from a deceased family member and, of course, I don't have the combination. It's turning into an obsession!
I've researched and tried as many things as I've been able to (some really helpful posts here!), but haven't had any success. Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated. There are some numbers engraved in the handle: 189631
I can take and post a picture of the safe if it would be helpful.

It's embedded in the wall, not much space in front of it so it's hard to take a full pic...

From the papers I have it appears to be a "Victor Fire Proof Safe" Model No. 3. It is made of cast iron and should weigh around 500 lbs. Originally it would have had wheels on the bottom. MAde sometime in the early 1900s.
The door itself should be 20" x 14 3/4".
The lock is made by Victor but it is similar to a Yale L-1. It is 3 wheels plus a drive wheel, hole change wheels, gravity dropped fence. So you dial your 3 digit combo and then turned the dial to the drop in point of 93-95 and kept turning to retract the locking bolts. It is not stated but it should be LRLR to open. The gates are quite wide so you shouldn't have any problem finding them.

Is it 4 turns to the left, stop @ number1, 3 to the right to number2, 2 to the left to number3 then 1 to the right to drop-in?
We have three numbers that were given to us by a family member who "thought" that was the combo, but they didn't work. It is possible, of course, that those aren't the numbers...
Thanks!!

On older safes where each manufacturer had a specific dialing sequence and most of it was handed down from locksmith to locksmith and safe owner to safe owner, and often lost to time, I consider having or knowing the dialing order just as important as having the combination. See if this helps explain it, and try your numbers in place of the ones listed: http://en.allexperts.com/q/Locksmithing ... ock-Co.htmSquelchtone

From looking at pictures of the lock it should be that dialing sequence.
