Locked Cary Safe

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Locked Cary Safe

Postby seattlesam » 11 May 2015 2:04

I just inherited an old Cary safe that is unfortunately locked.
Serial # 193658
I am looking for any info on it (age, etc.) & possible test combinations.
Pretty sure it's empty but would love to be able to get it open.

Nice old safe. With the serial number a locksmith that works with safes MAY be able to find the factory combo. Due to the safe age, I doubt it hasn't been changed over the years. It worth a try anyway.

Good luck :)

Nice opportunity to learn how the lock works and how to crack it by manipulation. [EDIT: removed link with Advanced info]

For now, we can help the public in this area with basic trouble shooting and diagnostics, but not full on safe cracking methods. That info is reserved for the Advanced area, in order to not accidentally teach crooks how to get into a safe. I'm on the fence about safe manipulation as it takes a lot of patience and practice, but for now I ask that folks offer basic diagnostics only.

OP: if that safe is locked, and you have no prior experience, it will not be easy and there is no simple trick we can show you to get into that safe. This is also the reason a real safe technician would charge you $300-$750 to get into it. We wont be discussing any drilling or other similar attacks in this area of the forum, typically folks come here and need help dialing or resetting a combo, if you have no combo and the door is locked, there's not much help we can really offer.

Some documented test combinations for Cary were as follows with the dialing order of 4L 3R 2L 1R (If this is at all condusing, you may want to first watch some how to dial a safe videos on youtube)
Here's such a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEYjgOFKR1U

Half the trouble with old safes is that they all used different versions of left right left and how many times around for each one, its almost like having a two part combination... the actual combination, and then the way to dial it in.

40-60-35
50-86-32
56-13-36
10-60-35

Hope this helps, sorry we cant be more detailed in other methods of entry.

I completely understand & appreciate the info. you're able to provide.
I will try those combinations this evening & report back.
Is there any way to figure out the age?
Also is there any sort of Cary registry or way of finding out who originally purchased the safe?
Thanks again for the help!

meet me at the mall tonight, I'll be at the work van with a DeLorean parked next to it ;-)

That's pretty much the only way to find out that kind of info in 2015. by going back to 1915. =)

Cary went belly up in 1929 and if you google around you can find other people's serial numbers and ages, your serial number is pretty high, so I'd say the 1920's, I don't have an actual list of serial number to year.

your safe has a high probability that the lock is a Yale Y-6.
combo sequence is 4L-3R-2L-1R to STOP at ____.

I'm not going anywhere near that DeLorean! 8)
What about the last #, I've read that it will stop on it's own & I saw somewhere else where 40 was the standard # on some safes. I'm assuming a lot of it is a guessing game.
I will try to research further & will post anything I'm able to dig up.
Thanks again!

it will stop on its own, thus the reference to "1R to STOP (at _____ ). # is determined by type of lock.
A Y-6 stops around 92.
