Removal of Old Safe

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Removal of Old Safe

Postby jketon » 11 May 2015 10:34

I recently purchased a house which include the safe in the images below. I take it this is a fairly neat thing, and before I tell a contractor to just put it in a dump I wondered if there is a good alternative? The old house owner provided me with a combination--but I can't get it to work, though perhaps that is just due to the age of the mechanism. Does anyone have a suggestion about what I should do with this safe?

Reason: yikes, images are 2,400 x 3,200 pixels, changing the IMG tags to URL links so they dont spill off the screen and cut off.

First, use a smaller size of the pictures. It is inconvenient to handle with such page now.
Second, make sure you use a correct procedure how to dial the numbers. I don't think the mechanism may be so worn out.
As I understand, the safe is open - you can call an experiecend locksmith to review the lock mechanism. The problem may be one small spring broken...

P.S. Squelchtone was quicker...

Dont have a contractor dump it, sell it on craigslist for $500 dollars. Ask for $850 and take $500 cash.

You're in luck with the door already open, you can take off the cover on the inside of the door and learn how the lock works. You may very well have the correct combination, but a lot of these old safes have specific ways you need to dial in the numbers. (4 times to the left, 3 times to the right, etc)

We can try to help you figure out the dial turning sequence and get that safe in working order so you can then choose to keep it as a conversation piece or sell it fully working.

If you do decide to have a contractor scrap it, I'd like to request the dial and dial ring, and internal lock mechanism and tumblers if you could save them for me please.
