Greetings, Hoping you guys can help me out a bit on this one. I have received a call to open three locks on what the gentleman told me was powder magazines that house explosives. He told me it takes a "jail house" style key, and that the key is roughly 6" long. I assume we wont be able to discuss this openly here, but i am calling on the greater minds than I to help me figure out what it is i am up against here.
He will be sending pictures in the morning, and from what i understand, there are three locks in total. If any of you guys can help me along or guide me to at least what i am looking at, i would be very appreciative. Thanks in advance.

Are you a locksmith or something? Does he want them open non-destructively?

uhhh well first off he is gonna need to produce a badge, the appropriate license to have explosives before you offer to do anything If this is US it sound like it might be a Jail type key, at that point they will have to go through the company they got the locks from most likely. You aren't supposed to just lose the key to the explosives room if military :/

Thanks guys,
Yes i am locksmith, licensed ,bonded and insured. The company is a mining outfit. I will be speaking with him further in the morning, i dont think he cares if its destructive entry or not, he just wants in. I was hoping to be able to get the make and model of the locks from him in the morning and the manufacture of the box itself and then call and secure a key from them personally, not sure if that is possible?
What am i looking at on a destructive entry? Drilling i assume ? Any information these locking systems would be appreciated. Thanks for the help.

Hard to say without pictures, but I'm guessing based on the description and key length it might be a Folger Adam type lock. If it is, Mr. Locksmith on YouTube has a video where he takes one apart, and there are a number of posts on this site that have still photos of the same thing. That will give you an idea of what you're up against. If so, a thermal lance would cut right through it without so much as a hiccup. Consider the destructive entry job done. But that technique does have its drawbacks, especially around high explosives. BOOM!!!! If he wants destructive entry, it doesn't get much more than that. Just be sure to wear gloves and some safety glasses. On a serious note though, if it is a prison type lock, if you take a look at how it's constructed you'll be able to easily see a couple good ways for destructive entry. We can't go into detail about how to do it in the open forum, but as a locksmith they should just jump out at you.

Heard that, thank you Sir. I appreciate the direction, will be burning the midnight oil on this one, but the job would be a really good one for my business at this time. Thanks again, and if anyone want to message me, id be will to provide proof of being a smith for further help. Any recommendations on drill bits ?

PLS, Please stop asking about Destructive Entry methods and tools right in the open, we straight up dont discuss it unless its via private message or in the Advanced sub forum away from public eyes. I know youre just trying to solve a problem and get the job done but I dont want to have to edit or delete this thread for crossing the line.
Thanks much, Squelchtone

Personally, I hate those clients--They get me all worked up, looking for a solution for their problem & for free I might add, then they go ahead and solve the problem themselves by simply finding the lost key
