Mass Hamilton x08 lock lost combination

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Mass Hamilton x08 lock lost combination

Postby pps » 18 May 2018 8:52

I am trying to reuse the electronic lock back from a mass Hamilton x08 lock which had a bad stepper motor. Unfortunately I do not have the combination that was used for this particular lockback. When installed on a different x08 lock, I receive an SA (surepitous entry) code upon powering the lock but am unable to clear it without knowing the stored combination. Entering the default combination or any othe combination results in a lightning boltand increments the incorrect attempt counter. The SA code is present even though the incorrect attempts is less than 15 (which is supposed to trigger the SA code. It appears that the operating instructions require the actual combination to be entered sooner or later when trying to change the actual combination or default reset combination using the change key. I thought there was a way to work around this to clear the stored combination. It appears you can do this wth the x09 generation locks. Any ideas or am I somehow messing up.

Am I the only one who thinks it's odd that a guy who
joined up 14 years ago has just one post?

Based on the extremely high failure rate of the X08, even on new units, I’d not recommend using it.

I can check with a friend, but it may take time.

Yeah, I joined 14 years ago, and have been doing alot of reading and increasing my knowledge over the timespan. I have an Electronics Engineering background and was fascinated with these government safe locks. I have acquired a few of them over the years. And have even retrofitted my gun safes with them. They are great locks but require a certain degree of TLC and precision during installation and operation. One thing I had to do was clean and replace the old and hardened grease. This contributed to increased force being applied to the stepper motor plastic gear which would eventually strip the teeth from the gear. Anyway, this was the first time I acquired a lock with an unknown combination and was trying to reset it to the default combination.

As much as I am thankful that you are here asking about an X08 lock, which I guess is a good sign that people trust we have all the answers, this is a very specific question about a very specific scenario on a high security lock that most of the hobbyists here have not had the chance to encounter. This sub forum, This Old Lock is honestly meant for much simpler problems like helping someone with the dialing order on an old safe, or troubleshooting a stuck wheel or fly, etc.

Personally, I have an X09 lock, but not much experience with X07's or X08's. It may be better to call Lockmasters or Kaba Mas and speak to or email technical support than hope someone here knows how to reset the combo on the back cover.

We do however have a handful of locksmiths and GSA techs, etc on here so you may just get an answer if you are willing to wait for it as not everyone here is on every day.

have you read page 13 (resetting SA condition) in this manual? http://mbausa.com/content/downloadfiles ... ration.pdf

and have you tried 50-25-50 just for kicks?

good luck,
Squelchtone
