Any info on this amsec safe lock

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Any info on this amsec safe lock

Postby Leader33 » 16 Oct 2020 17:36

Hello I'm new to safe manipulation and thought I would give it try with buying a Sargent and greenleaf lock and right before I placed an order I came across a safe for sale that the owner didn't have the combination to and was going to throw it out so I picked it up but now I'm kind of in over my head. I dont know how to find info on the kind of lock that is on the safe and cant find a model number anywhere on the safe and I've looked everywhere including behind the handle. If anyone has any ideas that would be great and thank you in advance. Happy picking everyone.

You can call Amsec, give them the serial number and they can tell you what type of safe it is. You can pay a local locksmith who has ties with Amsec, for the original combination when the safe left the factory. But, that is a very bad investment as it has most likely been changed. I can tell you that it is a decent quality fire safe, suitable for home or small office. It is not designed for significant valuables. I have opened them in the past by drilling. If you want to attempt to learn manipulation it will be a perfectly fine example. The lock is a standard Sargent and Greenleaf 6700 series lock. The normal turns are 4Left, 3Right, 2Left, and 1Right to stop and be open at about 85-95. Good find!
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.

Raymond thank you for the reply. I thought about calling to get the model of the safe but you answered my question about the lock so that's a big help. I know the safe can be drilled and honestly probably cut through with a saw without taking much effort but I thought it would be fun to get into myself and then have a safe lol. Thanks for your help and I'll keep everyone posted about my progress.

It looks like a model 1812 Home & Office record safe, circa 1990.

There's no need to ruin that safe with a hole or cutting or prying. If you're really serious about manipulation, you'll only regret damaging it later when you realize you could have been more patient.

Hey L4R3L2, I've been thinking about how this is a great puzzle but I'm having trouble with my contact area. It's 7 and 15 but I'm honestly not seeing much difference going around this lol. Maybe it's just because I'm a noob lol

Sorry for the poor lighting in this picture, but do any of you have advice on taking better graphs of my wheels? It all looks the same.

Hi, normally reading the forum rules is not necessary (IMHO), but in this case it is:
19. Discussion of topics deemed "advanced" are reserved for the advanced forums. This is for the public good. These topics include:
B) safe lock manipulation

So if I would answer you, then this thread would be moved to where you can't read it.

Nice safe! Unfortunately, we can't discuss manipulation outside the advanced area of the forum.
The picture you linked is blurry and I can't read the numbers, but I see an interesting point in the center towards the right.
While reading contract points, consistency is very important. Keep trying, I'm sure you'll get better soon. Feel free to PM me any question about it.

Good luck :)

Ya I read the forum rules twice before I posted but got excited that you're all here with more knowledge than myself. My bad. No worries I have the basic idea of how to do it so I'll just keep you all posted on my progress. Thanks again everyone for the replies and the help. 8)

Glad you got it open. Such a great feeling that first time... “Oh my God, I just opened a safe! I actually did it!”

Well done. :D
