Diplomat 100, have Key, code is lost

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Diplomat 100, have Key, code is lost

Postby Mokkmokk82 » 7 Dec 2020 11:43

Hi..
My grandparents died several years ago, and my parents have had a safe that was left behind after they died.
My husband and I got the safe yesterday, with a bet on that if we manage to open it, we can keep whats inside.

Er have tried Google and YouTube but havent found a good solution yet.

Have product number and Key number, code is fine missing.

This is an old safe and I imagine it is possible to open it without a locksmith or paying lots of money. Image

The lock is most likely their 3 wheel direct entry type. Nice you have the key. It should manipulate fairly easily.

Sorry but we do not discuss safe manipulation in the open forum. If someone wants to send you instructions via PM, that's fine.

Keep in mind that there's not an easy trick, like turn two times left and hit the door with a hammer and the door is open.
There's a long process to study the lock, take notes, and try many different combinations to find each number.

Good luck :)

Depends on the size of your hammer.

I used to sell these Diplomat safes, they are very similar to many other import models

Can't do that here as it's against the forum rules.

But, I think it's OK to recommend turning the dial with the key and/or handle turned as far as it will go. Feel all the way around and you should have a clue. Nothing the average person might not stumble upon with absolutely no knowledge or inclination of manipulating. This won't get you in (unless it happens to be set on a single number), but you may be able to deduce the rest, or research direct entry lock manipulation. That's all I can safely say, but assuming you're a lawful owner I wish you luck.

I am curious, though. I've seen these with just the key and dial, where the key activates the bolts. I assume on this model with the handle that the key just allows the handle to turn once the dial is set. Any confirmation on this?

AFAIK there are two versions. On both of them the handle is operating the bolts. In one version the combination lock and a lever attacked to the key lock are blocking the bolt work on their own. In a second version the combination lock blocks a slide, which is moved by the key lock. So first unlock the combination lock, then move the bolt work blocking slide with they key and then use the handle. In the first version the combination lock binds when turning the handle and in the second version when turning the key.

Sorry this is off topic, but anyone know what blank they accept? Or where do you get OEM blanks?
I have had difficulties copying the key, picking one was easy tho..

I stock Ilco SY series keys, unfortunately I can't tell you which key works but the SY series fits many of these type safes

What I mean is the SY series have left, right & center profile key blanks & you would need to stock at least 3 different blanks to cover all the possibilities

I assume 5-pin on these? I'm seeing four possible keyways, if I'm looking at the correct series.
