House with safe.

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

House with safe.

I bought a house that has a safe. The safe has been painted. From pictues it looks like a Herring-Hall-Marvin safe with a yale lock. The lady I bought the house from has passed away. The real estate agent told me the combination was on the safe. The label on the safe is "5,395.36 greenbush".
I tried 5 , 95 ,36
53,95,36
Does this safe need a driver?

Any Ideas?

Hello and thank you for your post.

Unfortunately, we can't see what you have in front of you, so it is impossible to answer your question with any reasonable accuracy.

Please share some photos of your actual safe.

Share with us the actual dialing process you are using, Left this many times to x, Right this many times to y, etc.

Thank you,

If you turn the handle, does it change how the dial turns?

The dial is harder to turn when pushing down on the handle.

You have a Yale HE lock. The safe was made by Herring-Hall-Marvin. A similar model is shown here by 00247:

The official dialling sequence seems to be similar to the modern locks with 4 times left, 3 times right, 2 times left, but then on the final right turn the dial won't stop itself and you need to stop on 0. Without knowing for sure how the lock opens I would just lightly turn the handle for the final turn to 0 and more than 0 if the safe doesn't open. The safe can be also opened equally with the reverse dialling direction. With modern locks the combinations would be slightly different. With wheels like this it maybe doesn't matter. With locks like this people may preferably write down the combo as four numbers to remind them of the position of the last stop. And if a real estate agent claims the combination was on the safe it may be a lie.

The slip w the number may just be a reminder for the real number. So try some variations of the given number, i.e. if the slip says 53,95,36, then try 36, 95, 53. Or 35, 59, 63, etc.

"Greenbush" was written next to the number. Did there deceased have some connection to that location? Maybe an area code or other numeral is connected to that location.
