Mosler 1913

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Mosler 1913

Hi there! I live in VA and I have my Great Grandfathers safe from Ny City where he owned a construction business. It lived in a non climate controlled NY garage for many years after his business, so the paint is falling off and a fair amount of rust. I unfortunately don't have the combination to get into it, and was told there's nothing in it. But I would love to get into it and would like some help about identifying the locking mechanism and what it may look like. As well as what the original paint scheme may have looked like. It looks like there was a paint job over the original. It is missing a top hinge bottom finial, will keep an eye out on ebay. Did't know if this has a particular model number. From the serial, it looks like it's from 1913. Thanks for any input!

The lock is either a Mosler 10 1/2 or a Mosler 5. The 10 1/2 has 3 wheels and the fence is pushed into gates by a turn of the handle. A turn of the handle (probably clockwise) will change a lot how the dial can be turned in this lock. Maniulation would probably be like with other direct entry locks. Dialing direction is mostly unimportant. Important is, that the final turn is to the gate of the drive cam, which should be at 34. The Mosler 5 has 4 wheels and a friction fence. Turning the dial should create the sounds of interacting gears on this. Manipulation is like a normal friction fence lock, i.e. with only one which is while turning the dial counterlockwise. This is also the final turn to stop to open it.

The paint looks to me just like some has fallen of. All the lines and letters look original. I am sure you can reconstruct the most of what is missing. The finials are difficult to find as an original part, so some people have started ot make new finials.
