S&G Safe Lock Wheel Retaining Clip

Postby Homeowner2u » 2 Feb 2024 18:10

Evening - Ran into a problem with my 3rd wheel losing the combination - opened the lock and tried to slide the 3 wheels off it's hub - but, felt resistance. Noticed that there appears to be a "retaining" ring or clip around the hub securing the wheel pack onto the hub.

This would be an older Diebold S&G likely from the late 70's. Anyone recognize the retaining ring about the hub? How does one remove it without damaging the ring, hub and other parts? Is this meant to be a "non-repairable" lock? I lost numbers on the 3rd wheel and wanted to inspect the wheels for wear and wipe them down, then use a change key to re-set my combination.

Any ideas? Please share them with me.

I like to use a razor blade or even a strong fingernail to lift the edge of the retainer ring-- this is a split ring & once the edge is raised you can follow around it with a small screwdriver or even a paper clip until it pops off. Best to do this inside a plastic baggy, so you don't lose the ring.

There is a very small tab on each side of the ring that allows you to lift the ring off, you may need a magnifying glass to see it, depends on how good your eyes are close up

I like to use my fingernail to split the ring in order to get it back on, once the edge is caught, you can follow the ring around with your finger while you press/squish the ring into place.

You could easily get a dozen replies on how to work it.

I use a normal curved pick for both on and off. By using the tip of the pick, rotate the ring around until it just covers one of the slots on the side of the hub, Slip the tip of the pick into the top of the slot and gently pry the tip of the ring out and up. Then push the pick in a little further so it comes out from only the one top part of the ring and slide the pick around and staying under the ring going all the way around twice. Keep your fingers on the ring to prevent it flying off as you get close to the end.

To put it back on, hold the ring up and put the curved pick between the two coils, about 1/4" from the bottom end. The curve of the pick should point inward. Hold the curve of the pick tip in the groove on the hub low enough that the end of the ring seats in the groove. Using your finger, push the ring down and around until it is completely on. You can remove the pick as the ring catches.

With a little practice this becomes VERY easy and fast.

I know the question was not asked yet but use the same curved pick to help replacing the spring on the lever. Line up all the wheel gates so the fence can move further inward. After Screwing the lever onto the bolt with the tip of the spring in the hole on the bolt, make sure you have not caught one ring of the spring under the lever before tightening the screw into the bolt. From the lever side slide the pick under the lever and use the curve to trap the end of the spring. Pull the spring under the lever and remove the pick
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.
