Looking to identify my Vault, Change Combo

Postby JCWalsh » 6 Feb 2025 11:01

I had this installed as the door to my ManCave when building my house. It was from a bank in central Kansas and based on pictures I believe it is a Mosler. I have tried to reset the combination to 0-0-0-0 but can not get it to work. Any ideas would really help.

A beautiful vault door! The lock is Yale as you can see on the dial. Can't say who made the door.
You can find some guide on how to change a lock with mesh change wheels on yt:

Nice looking old safe!

The wheels in the photo look to be set correctly. When you set all wheels to one number you no longer have to dial 5-4-3-2-1. Just turn the dial at least 4 times and reverse to the stopping point. Make sure you are turning the dial the opposite direction of the opening direction. You will know which direction the opening direction is by operating it with the wheel pack out. The dial should turn smoothly to pick up the fence and then stop when the lock bolt has been pulled (stop point.) If it does not open then something else is wrong instead of just the wheel pack.

Also, try dialing to 99 once and then 01. On old worn locks the wheels sometimes must be set to a number + or - the desired number to get it opening exactly where you want it. This is due to years of wear.

The third wheel in your photo looks off a little bit. If that is exactly as dialed, then the flies might be worn a bit or the space under them needs cleaning.
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.

I don't see that anyone has mentioned this yet: the numbers on the wheels/flies also give the order for the wheel placement. It is good to make sure those are in order.

1. What I would do: set all wheels to 0. Put the wheels back together
2. take a pen, or allen wrench or something. Spin the top wheel around until it catches all wheels, then see how far off each wheel is
spin the wheel again around the other way, catching all wheels of course, and check again. See if the "error" has changed, how much different it is in each direction.

3. Adjust the wheels, repeat step 2 until they align in the desired direction. Then put the wheels in the lock, and test your new combo at least 3 times before you try assembling the lock and closing the door. Never close the door without triple checking you have put everything together correctly, no screws missing, etc!

Another option is to simply leave the wheels out of the lock, then it will open whenever the dial passes the drop in area. I hate when locks completely lose parts, hang them up in the vault area so they don't get lost or something like that.
