Laptop locks: Is there anything worth it?

Thinking of upgrading your door security? Getting a better deadbolt or padlock? Getting a new frame or better hinges? Not sure what brand or model to go with for your particular application? Need a recommendation? Feel free to ask for advice here!

What if instead of fixing the laptop to a piece of furniture, it prevented the laptop from being used. The idea being that laptops get stolen most when you walk away from the table, when you walk away you close the laptop and it requires a key to be opened. so if it can't be opened or used then it's not much value to the thief unless they can unlock it. I imagine that if you have it in your own home you have nearly infinite amount of time to pick it or saw it open though, but it certainly makes a less savory target.

That all being said kind of leads me to consider using a laptop "safe" as a handbag as the best option. I've not personally tried it, but "DormVault" looks thin enough, and it looks like you could ditch their flimsy lock and use a good padlock with it. Really I'd imagine any 20", laptop proportioned metal box that can fit a padlock would do.

I spent 4 years on a campus where theft was a significant problem. I always carried my laptop with me or locked it up in my dorm/apartment. I say save the money on a laptop lock and take it (and your other belongings) with you if you have a 'bowel emergency'. It can even keep you entertained in the bathroom :) Alternatively, you can have someone you trust look after them.

P.S. If you live in a dorm and your roommate is careless, you may want to hide the laptop or lock it up in case the door is left open/unlocked. I'm not saying laptop locks are useless, but I think with enough diligence you don't really need them.
If you do not manipulate the lock, then the lock will manipulate you
