Lock advice please

Postby WTHhappend » 9 Mar 2015 19:23

Hello, any help would be much appreciated. I am looking to buy 3 locks, one for my front door, 2 for an inner door. The UPVC front door has a multi-point locking system

The inner door is wood with a wood frame and currently has a Yale deadlocking nightlatch on it

Despite what the manufacturers say, I know there is no such thing as an unpickable, bumpable etc lock but I am hoping between the 3, I can be as secure as possible. For the front door I wanted to focus on a lock that would strongly resist drilling and forcing. For the inner door I thought I would concentrate on picking, bumping etc.

I am in the UK but happy to buy from overseas if need be. I was looking to spend around £300 but will go higher if I have to. I have been checking out "high security" locks for a few days now, and for every lock I find, there is a video of somebody picking it or an identical type one, on Youtube! I am looking for locks that are good value for money and it would be wonderful if I could keep my existing locks and just swap out the cylinders.

I was alarmed to see a video of an Abloy Protec lock being breached on YT. The picker noted that once the outside sections were drilled away, the locking mechanism could be removed, decoded, a key made, and the drilled parts replaced so no one would know the lock was no longer secure. For this reason I would definitely want a lock that showed if anyone tried to tamper with it.

Thank you

Your right there are very few truely unpickable locks if any. Evva mcs is in my mind unpickable but outrageous exspensive. I have also seem the same attack on the protec that your talking about. While they can decode the lock (in the case that you have other locks keyed the same) I dont believe that it can be reassembled and the damage undetectable.

Most theives dont pick locks, they destroy them. Destructive entry on higher security locks while noisy is almost always much faster and requires little to no skill. You can have the most secure lock in the world on a wooden door, but it wont stop a determined man with a 12 pound sledge hammer. Know what i mean?

I like medeco locks, they are very difficult to pick at a reasonable price. While it is true that a small team was successful at bumping them (cant remember their names). It took months of crunching numbers, and trial/error. What they ended up with was a series of bump keys one of which would supposedly work on any bitting. Common criminals would never put the time and energy into duplicating this even if they had the know.

The idea most have with home security is to not be an easy target. If a thief knows that they cant be in quickly the move on. No one is going to spend 20 minutes on your porch trying to pick a lock. If your house is too much troublw they will in all likelyhood find another, easier target.

I like medeco too, prolly cause I bought a bunch on sale years ago, that I keep on using as I go from place to place. My house was broken into a couple years ago and the thief just bypassed the keyhole and attacked the latch with what looked like a screwdriver and a hammer. Out here where I reside there are lots of rocks everywhere, add to that the windows all over homes out here, to say nothing of walls made from chicken wire with a thin layer of concrete stuck to it and you will see that anyone who desires entrance to your home badly enough will get inside. I feel like most times it is enough to make the neighbors home look easy to get into.
Most homeowners I see like a strong looking lock presence on the front door, but most criminals will usually be entering from the rear doors, where they can get some cover.
I find a dog to be a good addition to security, and while a real criminal won't have much trouble fooling the dog, who wants to get bit finding out for sure? Get homeowners insurance, to make a better bet as well.

I notice companies are now selling some metal security screens, that are supposed to keep window entry down, I haven't checked the prices

My personal favorite is the Goji smart lock. It is compatible with all the wooden and metal doors that can use deadbolts. Hope yours are compatible. The Goji is made in the US but it should be available for you in the UK as well. The lock comes with a built-in camera, and is good at taking picture of anyone trying to open it. The lock provides you a visual confirmation of who is opening it, as an alert on your mobile phone.

Wow, coming from a first-time poster, this almost looks like an advertisement...

Wow, OP's personal favorite for a lock that is just now expecting to be shipped this month. How long have buyers been waiting with prepaid orders to get this lock?
