Doppia Mappa vs Keso 4000s Omega + Defender

Thinking of upgrading your door security? Getting a better deadbolt or padlock? Getting a new frame or better hinges? Not sure what brand or model to go with for your particular application? Need a recommendation? Feel free to ask for advice here!

Doppia Mappa vs Keso 4000s Omega + Defender

Postby Francesco » 10 Aug 2016 7:36

Hello everybody, I am looking to upgrade my door and make it more secure, I figured this would be the best place to ask for advice.

I live in an apartment building in northern Italy and my main entrance is protected by a very common steel security door with an obsolete "doppia mappa" lock. Where I live used to be a very quiet and safe place but nowadays the home break-ins carried by eastern Europeans gangs are increasing at a very alarming rate, the news say the doppia mappa locks are not safe anymore since burglars have been using for years the infamous Bulgarian Lock Pick.

So, I asked a couple local locksmith and had conflicting opinions on the matter. The first locksmith I contacted suggested me two solutions:

1. Euro cylinder Kaba Matrix + Disec Defender + installation @ €400,00 + reduced VAT
2. Euro cylinder Keso 4000s Omega + Emerald Defender + installation @ €450,00 + reduced VAT

The second locksmith told me the above locks are full of "faults" but wouldn't go into details nor suggested me any alternative until I went in person to his store, which I haven't done yet.

I would like to know if you think a Keso 4000s Omega + Emerald Defender is gonna offer me good protection against any kind of attack and/or if you have better alternatives.

Thank you. Regards,
Francesco

Ciao Francesco,

As long as you install a defender, almost any decent lock you choose is fine. Both the locks you listed are fine. Mottura and Cisa make good ones too.

I'm not aware of the keso faults your locksmith mentioned.

Cheers :)

Thank you for the reply. Do you have any particular model in mind by Mottura and Cisa which I could look up?

Do you think a Magnetic Defender would offer better protection than a regular one and be worth the hassle of the extra key?

Maybe a bit more, it depends on the aggressiveness of the attack.
With some Disec types, there's a little bit more protection - but not much, since that locking mechanism can of course be manipulated, too.

Thanks mh. Which models of Disec are you talking about?
What if i installed a Magnetic Defender on my actual Doppia Mappa lock to protect it from the Bulgarian Lockpick? Would that be more secure than an Euro cylinder + standard defender ?

Doppia Mappa (double bitted key) locks can sometimes be opened with "magic keys" - the concept is called "self impressioning".
If a burglar owns such tools, they will likely also be able to open Disec defenders.

I agree with mh,even with a defender, you need to change the old doppia mappa and install an euro profile cylinder.

I agree with mh and femurat. And I think any combination you wrote would serve you well.

Maybe the magnetic one is a tiny bit more effective since it hides the lock you use, so it's harder to scout it out and prepare for that specific type with tools&technique.
If 50 eur is not a big sum for you I would chose the keso, it's bit better than the kaba. (materials used for example) But if you choose the kaba you shouldn't worry either.

But anyway, maybe it's already settled :)
To infinity... and beyond!
