Padlock for my Dad's old Land Rover.

Padlock for my Dad's old Land Rover.

Postby cheerIO » 30 Aug 2014 17:02

Hello All,

I'm looking for a padlock to secure the gastank of my Dad's Land Rover.

(next paragraph is just background, not lock related)

We bought it almost ten years ago. It was as close to original condition as I could find. and my Dad absolutely Loved it. It is a 1971 Series 2a. We took it down to the frame, rebuilt the engine and transmission, replumbed the brakes, tore down all the axles and hubs, cleaned it all, and put it back together. The only modern changes were to install an alternator and shoulder belts. If my Dad wasn't working on something in the shop, he was out driving around with my Mom next to him and the dogs in back. Dad died this past year. He was very sick for about 12 months leading up to it. So it hasn't moved in quite a while. I start it every once in a while but everything connected with Dad has been very painful for me to handle for a long time. I want to get over this and get the Landy running again! I've started fixing it up and I want to drive it as as a little tribute to the Best Dad Ever.

So, as a final touch that you guys could help me with, I thought I would try to find a nice little padlock to put on the gas tank. I refuse to put a crappy little master lock on there so I would like suggestions on an old/interesting lock that would fit the part.

As I said, it is a 1971 Series 2a. It is a North American model but it was built in Solihull Warwickshire England. The hole in the cap is slightly bigger than 7mm. And I would like a bit more security than a Masterlock, as she has had her gas siphoned once already.

Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

ABLOY would certainly stand up to the elements. Many older locks would concern me about failure of the lock.

Love the truck!

To match the vehicle a Squire 4 lever would look the part.

I would turn the hasp over though so it swings down which is how I've seen them, the lock hangs better when it is reversed and it stays out of the way when filling the tank.

Ahhhh. ABLOY. Maybe it is time to track down my dream lock, the elusive 3020. :D I bet that would look awesome on there after it weathered a bit.

That Squire would definitly fit the part. The 220 model seems to be a good fit.

And thanks for the suggestion about reversing the hasp. You are right and there are another set of holes to mount it in the opposite location. Only, it reminded me of why my Dad and I always had to work on the car together. :D Every freakin bolt on this thing has a free nut on the other side. And the other side of the bolt is always somewhere you cannot reach with your other arm. I tried to undo the bolts securing the hasp and they just spun and spun. So I tried to find the bolts on the other side, but they are under other panels, that are under other panels, that have to come out. Oh well, I'll tear it down this week. I'm sure Dad's laughing at me right now. At least I'll get to use our favorite tool for the Land Rover, the RivNut Gun! :D

Very nice vehicle!
And both old ABLOY 3020 as well as Squire padlocks regularly show up on eBay. I would also probably go with a Squire, for the "British" factor...

Do the doors have lever locks, BTW? ;)
