Peterson or SouthOrd Case better?

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Peterson or SouthOrd Case better?

Postby bprzybyl » 3 Mar 2006 15:37

Hello,
I know this is kind of a frivalous topic, but I can't decide, so I figured why not ask people who might have already made this decision. I'm going to be getting ( :D in the mail now! :D ) a set of peterson picks. But they don't come with a case, and I tend to misplace things when they are not neatly kept together. I was looking at buying a peterson G3 Tri-fold case (http://www.peterson-international.com/pickcase-details.htm#bi-fold) when I started to think that I would want a zippered case. So I remembered that SouthOrd's MXPS-62 set comes with a zippered case (http://www.lockpickshop.com/p-MPXS-62C.html), which would be comparable in price to the Peterson with the LP101 discount. My main questions are - Does the SouthOrd actually say SouthOrd on it, as well as MPXS-62? If it does, do the smaller SouthOrd's? Does the peterson case keep the picks in good? The main reason for questioning getting the peterson set is the fact that it has a possibility, albeit limited, that a pick might fall out. I kinda feel bad already, because after all, if I get a peterson set I should get a peterson case.

Any help would be greatly apprecieated. Thanks.

The Peterson case, (for Peterson picks) is really cool. The Southords are kinda meh. Go with the tri-fold, you wont regret it.

The peterson picks come in a very convenient plastic tube, that is rather nice for storage. But if you want a leather case, go with the Peterson. It is very nice, and made of good leather. The SO cases... I guess its leather.

I have a Soutord case and I really like it. You need to wait a bit for the leather to become supple, untill then it's stiff and crappy, but you can accelerate the process by crumpling the case flexing it quite a fe times.

This is the 9 piece set, with a snap fastener.

The Peterson does look nice, but I've never trie it so I won't say anything.

Thank you for all the help. I've decided to go with the peterson. Now one final question of your preference-

Should I go with the "Full Lambskin" or "Cow Outer Lambskin LinedPockets"?

I use the older style Peterson Tri-Fold for my "All Around Kit" and could not think of a better case for the money. The S.O. cases (and similar zipper styles) are OK at best, but there is no comparison to the Peterson Bi and Tri-Fold cases. They have a leather flap that covers the tops of the tools to prevent them from falling out and one of the best features is that there are pockets behind the main front pockets so that you can add some of your favorite tools as seen in these pics.

My Tri-Fold currently holds:
9 Peterson rubber handled picks
12 various tension wrenches
6 LAB picks
2 prong tension wrenches
1 Feather-touch tension wrench
4 disk tumbler picks
2 double sided Southord picks
1 broken key extractor
2 Peterson Bypass tools (Knife and AM100)
Peterson I-Core tension wrench set with Slender Gem pick
1 tweezer-style tension wrench
5 piece warded pick set
plastic card stock
Rytan plug spinner

This might seem like quite a lot, but the case easily fits into a back or jacket pocket. Overall, I think the Peterson folks deliver a well-though highly useable design in everything they create.

Are those rubber grips? - or the plastic ones?

If rubber - do you find them good?

Sorry for the thread-side-traking

They are the rubber handled Petersons...

I have the plastic(blue) the rubber(black) and the textured(red), all are excellent handles (a bit thicker and I believe more comfortable than the HPC's S.O.'s etc.)

The rubber is not soft or spongy at all and very strong(like a tire perhaps).
I prefer them only slightly over the plastic handles as they provide a better grip than the plastic with little or no loss of "feel" when picking.

IMO, you can't go wrong with Petersons.
