To make a spring and pin, just take the spring from a ball point pen, and screw it onto the back of the one inch safety pin, then screw the end of the spring just into the loop on the safety pin, this makes a little curve at the end of the spring the locks to the radius of the pick pair. to insert the picks, hold them paired in front of you with the pick tips pointing to your left, put the tips into the spring at the loop end of the saftey pin, push until you reach the twist, then compress the spring toward the loop end of the pin as you rotate it past the twist. this should leave the pinspring devise inside the radius of the tensor end of the pick pair, if it come out on the other side, it wont work very well. If these directions seem too specific, I am just trying to describe the way to do it right and when you get that idea, you can do it any way that works. I would send one of these with every set, except I dont have that many old ballpoints, and they are easy to make. to start the spring on the back of the pin, just lay it crosswise and screw it off until the end drops, then reverse direction and screw it on, as you get closer to having it on, you will find that the spring is a bit longer than the pin so you will have to compress the spring.
