Hi Duke,
Not sure if you've seen the pick making video made by Pyro but here's the link locked/Making_Picks_1.wmv . It's a very detailed video that shows you exactly how to make picks. The material used are the hacksaw blades. Other possible materials include wiper blades, garden rakes, street sweeper bristles, and brick strap. I'm sure there are more but this will give you a variety.
As for the size, I'm pretty sure I've seen a picture/diagram with a 1:1 scale of different picks listed somewhere on this forum. I'll have a look around and see if I can find it for you.

Hey Duke,
The pictures you found are the ones I was thinking of so I'm glad you were able to find it. The link for the pick making video is the correct one. I went back to the post where it was which is viewtopic.php?t=1095&highlight=making+picks+video and realised there's opening hours for the server. Try again within the time frame and definitely download the video. It's 52mb's in length.
Good Luck

thanks for that that helps alot also. I just took a weilding rod from an arc weilder and made a pic out of it it was 7018 rod. I took of all of the flux and cut it to length with a hacsaw then i groungd the shaft flat save for the handle. I then cut a diamond shape in the end. With steep angles. I then tried it but it was way to soft it was bowing so i heat treated it 3-4 times and it was still to soft. Then i heated it up red almost white hot and plunged it into ice-water not caring at this piont if it craked or became to brittle. To my utter surprise it was barly harder then when i started but that little was more then i had. It was still way to soft though so it bent the diamond and it broke when i tried to strighten it.
I also just found a great handle from a mine screw-driver that the end can be reversed from philips to flat head and an 1/8 inch road fits in PERFECTLY is is hard plastic also. I was also thinking about a round file and make the handel out of that and ur fingers go with the stroke so they get good grip.

The pictures on the crypto.com website, could these be used as a general guide for making a home made set of picks? It seems interestingly possible, and I am even considering trying it, while I continue to try and download the video from pyro.
As for the material to be used, we have a "everything in one place" store here on Okinawa that has metals of different gauges, and some seems like it would work pretty darn good. It's even cheaper than hacksaw blades ($1.50 converted) on the local economy.
I am so looking forward to my return to the land of the big PX.

Okiewind, I have used the pictures on crypto.com to make picks and it worked quite well.
As for hacksaw blades I picked up mine for around $4 - $5 cnd. for a pack of 10 blades, and you can get 2-3 picks out of each blade(2 if you only use the ends for the holes, to put on a keychain) and they work well. Thats about $0.15 - $0.25 per pick.
