When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Tools

Postby slade56 » 15 May 2004 11:06

I just started picking locks. I recieved a 14 piece tool set. What i need to know, is what tools are for which lock. Earlier i saw a post where someone posted a picture of some tools. Thats kinda what i need to see, with the name of the tool and which lock to use it on. Any help would be appreciated. thanks...
By the way, soon as my tools got here, i picked the dead bolt on my house door. Took about 15 minutes tho. From that earlier picture i saw, i think i used a deforest small and one of the little wrenches.

For a tumbler you will want to use a small hook(curved up edge) or a half-diamond( the end of the pick looks like a diamond but its cut in half).

BTW where did you order your picks from?

i got them from lockpicksonline.com. If you have time, go there and look at the 14 piece set. Thats the tools i have.
what you told me helps, thanks. Is there anywhere tho I can find some pictures of the tool, and the lock it works with? I ordered the book, Secrets of lockpicking. Hope that will help. i gotta tell ya, when that dead bolt unlocked for me, it was a rush. Kinda like my..."first time" hahaha
Anyway, i guess you could say it got me goin. I'm walkin around the house tryin to open everything. Not alot of luck yet tho. Still dont know what pick to use on what lock.

Generally, as stated by Camarda, a hook or a half-diamond will suffice for most of your picking needs when working with pin tumblers. When working with wafer locks, picking or raking with a half-diamond works well. Trying to pick lever or tubular locks with these tools is pretty much impossible.

HTH.

On the second pick down, on the left side is a half-diamond and on the right is a hook. Hope that helps and welcome to the site :)

The top pick is a combination of a snake (left) and an intermediate hook. The second down is a half-diamond (left) and a shallow hook. The third down is again a half-diamond with another snake. The fourth down is also a shallow hook. Lastly, the fifth down is a 6" metal rule...
