Got a broken pick?

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Busted my fav short hook on a deadbolt I was holding.
I had the bolt apart so i could hold it in one hand.
once picked it would spin ALL the way around and re-lock.

I had picking time down to just a few seconds (2-5 each time)
So I was "running laps" to see how many times I could pick it
in 15 minutes.

after about 40 or so "laps" it snapped right behind the hook.
I had had it for about 2 years, but never used it THAT much.
I was in a hurry and being a bit too rough with it.

I made another one that same night... it LOOKED the same size/shape,
but my time on the same deadbolt was up to 8-12 seconds.
I guess it wasnt perfect.....gee I miss that pick.

I also busted an "ugly" rake a few weeks ago.
I call it ugly because... IT WAS!
It had so many nasty groves that a lot of cheap locks
would pop open after ONE INSERTION from all the vibrations.
(Almost like bumping)

Had a few fav snake rakes too... but were not broken,
someone ran off with them....
You know who you are...
I hope one breaks off and cuts you,
and the infection causes you to loose a finger.
....and then you get an itch you CANT scratch.

ooh, my turn to chime in!

So, i have never broken one of my purchased picks. When i was first starting out (i am sure everyone has been there) i ran out and got hacksaw blades and cut them with my dremil. before learning that too much tension is bad and pushing too hard on pins can be really bad for picks i broke just about every one of my homebrews. i think a total of 3 hooks and 2 rakes. Monetarily i really could have cared less because it cost 2 dollars for a new pack of blades and another 15 minutes to make a new set. If i had Kaotic's homebrews, well then i probably would have bashed myself in the face with heavy mining equipment if i broke one. just my 2 hundreths of a dollar

Never managed to bust a pick in a lock, however what others are saying is true, when you are a full time locksmith you use your picks for many other things not just picking. :( They can break quite easy. Got a HPC set there that work supplied, but i dont rate them at all, so its my own picks im trashing :( Oh well
