DIY: Picks, a work in progress!

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

DIY: Picks, a work in progress!

Postby njalme » 15 Feb 2008 9:10

Hi, I recently stumbled onto this forum after extensive googling on the lock picking subject. I've gotten totally addicted to this (unfortunately for my girlfriend which is getting quite tired of all the oh! oh! come look at this stuff!, oh! oh! look what I did!. I mean really tired! ) Anyways..

I've drooled on the different make-your-own-picks guides found here and there and decided I was gonna raise my hobby to the next level and actually make a set of my own. I live in Norway so the cheapest place for hardware would be Clas Ohlson for me. Guess it's quite similar to you Home Depot guys. I've bought everything new, I'm as you probably understand a newbie in every aspect (lock aspects!) and ye, I had to buy everything. Dremel, tools, materials, and goggles (of course 8) ). The whole added up to 550 NOK (~68 €) which I think is quite cheap after comparing with some other shops.

Well, now you've had the S H O R T introduction so I'll post you some pictures of the stuff I bought.

The materials I bought include: hacksaw blades, some metal plates used to smudge out paste (don't know the English name for em), a screwdriver kit and some replacement clock hands which I thought I could turn into light tension wrenches.

It's more like a small blog for my own entertainment but possibly you'll find it to be too. Take note, the picks I will be making will be as thin as possible as I trouble alot with narrow key ways. TrioVing locks -_-! I've set my mind on those bogotas and also a single pick which I'll see if I can fashion to fit into the narrow trioving key way I got here.

In addition as you might see on the materials picture I picked up a small screwdriver kit for glasses which I will see if I can turn into a handy small picking kit. Having picks as bits instead of those small screwdriver inserts.

Anyway this should keep me busy for a while and I probably have to narrow it down as I believe I'm way over my head in things to do. After all I haven't made anything out of metal since I went to high school where I fashioned a machete. Heh.

Cheerio, :P

Posting two pictures, the first one is when it's almost finished, Just needing some polish and fine sanding.

The second picture is where I fail heh, I tried the tickness after the first picture and figured I wanted to make it abit thinner. That's when I file down too much on the first curve as you can probably see in the second picture, (it's a little out of focus, I know.) and it's now too fragile. It bends very easily at that spot. So I thought I'd stop there since it's kinda flawed and start over again on another one.

Anyway I think it came out quite o.k. figuring it's the first one I cut =) I just gotta say that the pick DO work it just bends too easily.. :+\

So that's the end of chapter one: Bogota Flawed ^^,
