Slimline or regular?

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Slimline or regular?

Postby ahazaq2 » 13 Feb 2008 17:44

I'm buying some individual picks from lockpickshop.com, and most people here say I should start with a hook and a small diamond, but should I get them in slimline or regular?

And yes, I'm from the USA, and I'm just starting out.

at the price of the things i agree get both if you are only picking up a few basic picks.

Slimline will open more locks but the standard will be easier to learn on if they fit well.

I would get the standard but get the slimlines too only if you can afford it. Slimlines tends to bend much easily compared to the standard picks and most all of us were pretty heavy handed in the beginning and broke one or two picks during our early learning process.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

I've just started with this as well, bought the slim line 15pcs set. I haven't tried the 'normal' size versions and as I live in Norway I doubt I've encountered any 'normal' size locks. Some of the ones I've tested barely even fit the slim lines, like the door locks around the house.

True, they do tend to curve a bit if you treat em rough but they bend just as easily back and don't seem fragile at all to me. Unless you got feet for hands I think you should go with slim line. Presuming you'll encounter some narrow locks in the future. :D

I never had any picks snap, just keep bending until they are all disfigured and hard to use.

get the biggest part of your picks as regular and one or two at slimline (big half diamond, hook for example)

also get the racking picks in traditional : it's useless to have them is slimline at they are SO BIG at the beginning of the pick that if you can put in the beginning you don't need slim :

also, afaik southord slim and regular have the same thickness
