making lock picks

Postby Adam Vester » 23 Jun 2004 18:35

here is how i make my lock picks i thaught i would share here is what u need

car window wiper
vice
small set of files
large file

first you get the window wipper and take out the metal rod in the middle. you then put this into the vice and make the shape you need with the small files then file down with the large file then smooth off with one of the small files. this way is very effective they picks last for a long time and work grate its the methord i always use you could also do the same but use a butter knife instead of a window wipper or hacksaw blade but i perfer car window wipers

anyway yah thats how i make my lock picks if anyone else got any ideas of what to make them from please share.

There are several threads already relating to this topic. Search would yield tons of hits. An excellent place to get ideas is from Pyro's now famous video.

If you thin them to fit in there they break easy.

only certain forums have an edit button... apparently not long after the forum started, some people abused the edit button and deleted all of there old posts or something like that... wasn't around when it happened, but ever since then, edit has been disabled pretty much everywhere. (the only exception i can think of is the for sale/buy/trade/whatever it's called forum)

I think I may have found a good source of metal for picks..

At work we have this tent... made by the company Ez-UP

We broke it.. My friend and I asked the boss if we could have it... she said yes... I think it will work nicely.. I'll post more as I find it out...
I wish the world was flat like the old days, and I could travel just by folding the map.

I attempted to manufacture my first pick - a simple hook.

My advice - don't try to use hacksaw blade!

After shaping with a Dremel tool and small files, I harded the hacksaw blade using a propane tocrch until the pick was orange-red. Then quenched it in oil. It appeared hard and not brittle. I then tempered it at 700 degrees fahrenheit in a small oven for 15 minutes.
The hook still bent.
A second try, this time leaving the pick hardened using the same metal also ended with a weak pick.

Heres some advise on making pick from blades. Hacksaw blades are a good material, but if you want to harden/temper them, do it with the blade in tact (minus the paint, this will block any carbon you would absorb from the oil). Then grind your pick out of the blank. Work carefully, cooling the pick so as to not burn the temper you already have given the steel. Also, a better blade to use is hss, not the plain carbon steel.
