UN-picking deadbolts

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

UN-picking deadbolts

Postby Picky-picky » 24 Apr 2008 21:46

Not long ago, a friend arrived home to find that she had left her house key at work. She called me, the handy yet always platonic guy she knows, and I picked the deadbolt. She very gratefully asked how she was to lock the door when she left the next morning. Good thing I live close by, or I would have had to suggest I stay.

While this tip is NOT to be used for illegal activity, if you have picked or bypassed a deadbolt, but need to lock it again from the key side, if you can't leave the plug in that special nether region where the bolt is withdrawn but the pins haven't reset , you *could* pick it again, OR

Glass-reinforced packing tape! Also known as filament tape. Works like this, and only if the deadbolt has a knob.

1. Cut a piece of tape that will reach from the knob, through the door seal, and leave enough to pull on outside.

2. Set the knob so that the T handle is as vertical as possible while not throwing the bolt.

3. Adhere the tape down the side of the T opposite the bolt, so that pulling it throws the bolt. Do not wrap the tape completely around the handle!

4. Very important! Fold the rest of the length of tape lengthwise on itself so that no adhesive areas remain.

5. Close the door with the free end running around the edge of the door through the seal, being careful the tape doesn't block the bolt.

6. A strong but steady pull turns the handle, throws the bolt, and the T handle turns such that further pulling peels the tape off. You retrieve the tape intact, save the day, and are then free to not make any move on your platonic friend that would only confirm that you have no chance. It's better not to know.

Urm... well... if the "sticky tape" trick fails you in the future, you might want to familiarize yourself with this thread.

Now that's a very interesting fun filled experience and a good tip incase something like that were to occur.

I would also like to add that if the bolt and the plate are properly aligned it doesn't require to much force to turn the knob in the locked position and hopefully the door and jamb doesn't create such a tight seal that it restricts the tape from being pulled.

Oh, and don't sell yourself short so quickly, i'm sure it earned you some brownie points to get another call if she found herself in a similar predicament.

Another method, if there is sufficent clearance between the door and the jamb is to slightly extend the bolt with the knob, close the door and reach in with a sharp object and slowly move the bolt over in little "bites". I've used that method to lock the door on a friends house when, as a house guest, I was leaving later than anyone with a key. Until the bolt is completely thrown on most cheap residential deadbolts it is "live" and moveable in this method.

You could also use a plug spinner to re-engage the bolt to re-lock the door.

I actually unlocked a door to a very very large warehouse in the little bit manner, I was told I was full of crap when I passed this along to another locksmith that I got er done, I just pulled the latch through the crack a little at a time with a sharp tool and pulled the door open!
