Differentiating Peterson's picksets

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Differentiating Peterson's picksets

Postby ridinplugspinnaz » 13 Jan 2010 2:59

This is something that's been bugging me for awhile. Every time I go to Peterson's website to drool over the government steel picksets they have for sale, an exercise in lust quickly deteriorates into frustration.

Why, you ask? Because from the pictures and descriptions they provide, it's nearly impossible to tell what picks they actually include in the different sets! For example, the GS-14 and GS-20 sets seem to be mostly similar, but I can't make out from their low-resolution picture what picks are in the back row of the pick case. Obviously they sell the Government Steel picks in the rubber handles, those are all up front. But what dipped picks are those in the back, exactly? There are times where the picks shown in the picture don't even seem to add up to the supposed number of picks in the set.

Anyway, is there anyone out there with more detailed information about specifically which picks go into Peterson's various sets? I don't know if they intentionally obfuscate the differences or not, but every time I go to see their offerings, it is an exercise in frustration.

In the GS-14 set they seem to have a Peterson Gem, a snake rake and a half diamond pick for the dipped handles. The dipped handle tools in the GS-20 set looks like it comes with a Gem, a short hook, a reach, and the three Deep Cut Access picks. Can't really tell if any of them are the standard thickness picks or the slender picks though. Guess you'd have to e-mail Peterson to find out for sure on that part.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

Call them up, ask for Ken and talk it over with him. The website bugs me too so I usually buy what I can of peterson stuff from other suppliers or from peterson at trade shows etc. I have ordered from Peterson's site before but I knew exactly what I wanted and therefore knew what I would be getting which usually takes longer than other suppliers. I know when I used my card that came with my pro-1 to get my free pick tip it took a few emails and a phone call but after a couple of months it did show up.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

I hate that website too bro. They are just loosing customers by not providing detail. There is no way I would order anything off a website with only hopes that I'm buying what I want. Shipping to me and back to them costs way too much, by then you lose the savings of buying online and should have just got it from the store and not have to deal with shipping time. Plus, I do most of my online browsing and shopping on the weekends and at night so I can't call and ask...
