DYI Buffing Wheel for polishing your picks

Postby Brother Paul » 11 Feb 2010 8:02

Using leather to polish with can give you excellent results
Here we will make a Buffing wheel using items most
locksport DYIers already have around
.................................Items Needed......................................................
.Hole Saw
.peace of wood (size depending on size of wheel you want to make)
.Light Green or Red buffing rouge
.a piece of leather
.Sewing kit and strong thread
.sized bolts, lock nut and washers
.sand paper or sander
.Razor blade or exact o knife
.........................................................................................................
In this exercise ill be making a small one to fit a drill or extremal tool but you can make them anysize even to fit on your bench grinder

...............................................step 1.................................................
Cut your out your disk/circle out of your wood using your Hole saw ,sand
to a even shape but make sure to leave the outer ring of the
wood course for grip
...............................................step 2.................................................
wrap your peace of leather around the wood disk you have made and
mark it just where the it meets together leaving no overlap or slack
cut and trim the leather to fit the size of the wheel /wood disk
,(leave the rough side of the leather out and the smooth side on
the wood)
...............................................step 3.................................................
sew your leather together on the meeting ends butting them together with strong nylon thread be careful not to bind or bunch the leather then slip the leather on the wheel
..............................................step 4..................................................
Using a bolt and nut and 2 washers put a washer on the bolt then insert the bolt into the hole in the wood made by the hole saw add the second washer and then thread lock nut ,gently grind the remaining threads off even and smooth , insert into your drill or extremal and use ( apply green or red buffing compound or just use the leather its self)
.........................................................................................................
Note , i have mine mounted on a old vacuum cleaner engine so i always have it to use with no exchanging .
