majetics picks - any good

Ive been thinking about buying some majestics picks, i was wondering what you guys thought of them ?
How do these compair to southord picks ?
My local locksmith says there a good pick but he uses hpc's
Im not made of money and dont want to throw it down the drain ! whats your honest opions pls guys

IMO the are superior to SO picks, but not on par with HPC. I like spring steel picks better than stainless so take that into account.

If you don't go crazy with really heavy tension those picks will serve you very well. Majestic brand was my first real pick set and often saw them on TV shows and movies when I was in my teens so I kind of have a sentimental attachment to them. And I don't sand these either. I like them with the factory black finish.

If I had money to burn I'd buy a set again, just as part of a locksport collection.

You might want to consider Southern Specialties http://www.lockpicktools.com/. I've bought hundreds of picks from him for my lockpicking classes, along with just about everything else Richard offers. The quality is always excellent, they pack and ship right away and try to do everything they can to help. Like setting up special pick sets the way you want.

It's a family business and they will spend all kinds of time on the phone with you. Richard is the machinist that actually made most of Southords' dies, btw. He uses steel with a touch of chromium in it, so it's stainless, FWIW. There's a good writeup in "Non-Destructive Entry Magazine".

My first set..long ago, was Majestic. I still like them.

However, I now use HPC and SouthOrd, all with the metal handles.

I think the SouthOrds (SO) are good, time will tell. I KNOW the HPCs are good-- they cost a bit more than SO, but if you buy only the basics, it works out to be only a few dollars additional for HPC.

My local locksmith says he will swap a hpc hook for a majestic :

I started with a small Majestic set and still use the picks today. There's nothing wrong with them. I also have the more expensive Peterson sets and a Southord set, but I won't give up my Majestics.

majestic are great picks and at a couple of £ each well worth getting,

they are a bit fat for some locks but usually do the job. They tend to banana after a while but most picks do.

Southord are ok but a bit too flimsy, theyre fine for delicate picking sessions and tight warding.

I must've encountered a couple of bad production runs or something here in the states. The Majestic sets I've seen here were badly finished and a lower carbon steel that bent way too easily. Maybe they were Chinese knockoffs in Majestic cases. Has anyone ever encountered that?

Ive not heard of the knock off to be honest but also wouldnt bloody surprise me . Ive got a set of majestics recently after i sold my 1st set , never the less after a few other sets ive soon converted back to my 1st pickset

Sorry HPC is the way to go. Make friends with a locksmith and you can have him order them for a couple bucks a piece.
