Wallet small hook options?

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Wallet small hook options?

Postby theTastyCat » 8 May 2011 22:36

Hey all - I currently carry a set of Rai/Sere's fantastic titanium bogotas in my wallet. And, don't laugh, I also carry one of those fake credit-card holders that contains a few picks. Clearly this is like having a Corvette and a Chevette in the bays of a 2-car garage. It's just that I really can't pick worth a darn with the half-diamond portion of the Bogotas. I'm sure this is my fault and not the pick's, but it just seems to flex too much, which probably means I'm using too much tension. BUT, that little goofy small hook in the credit card can often get it done even though it's really stubby without hardly any handle at all. But, it's obviously less than ideal.

I find one of my most reliable tools is the small hook in my SouthOrd 14-piece set, but it's just too darn big to try to fit in a wallet. So either I should

a. quit crying and learn to use the bogota half-diamond like a real man

or.

b. does anybody have any good suggestions as to what might be a solid small hook that would easily carry in a wallet to complement those AMAZING bogotas. I searched for some sort of folding/locking open small hook, but found nothing that would work in a wallet.

Many thanks.

I have one of those fake CC pick cases too, but I threw out half of the picks that came with it and substituted my own, made out of wiper blade inserts with no extra handle. I recommend that.

Not a bad idea, but I doubt that at my level of experience of picksmithing (zero) I'd be able to create anything that's better than the small hook that comes with it! Perhaps in a year or so I'll be more confident. I have started saving my wiper inserts though!

I have the one made by ToooL that you can snap out each tool from its card form. I got it from Security Snobs when they still had it.

Southern Specialties at http://www.lockpicktools.com/lockpicks.htm has a set called the KGB-7. It has six shorty picks riveted together at the end, a tension wrench and a vinyl sleeve. If you're actually putting it in a wallet and it's too bulky, it's easy to drill out the brass rivet and carry the picks individually. They're not very fancy and will need some sanding, but they're inexpensive.

HPC also makes some short picks. Some of them are available individually, or they have a set that comes in a leather wallet with four picks, an extractor and two tension wrenches (TFW-5). They are three inches OAL, stainless steel, .022" thick and have rubber handles. They are a shortened version of their 2000 Series picks.

They used to be available in a roll-up set with all the 2000 Series pick and extractor profiles called the Regal Rollup Pick Set (SPPS-2000) but at the I don't see it on their site anymore so it may be discontinued. They're also only showing three pick profiles available plus one extractor if you want them individually.

The offset half ball (SPP-31) is too delicate for my taste but the hook is good and the offset half diamond (SPP-30) is one of my favorite picks. The edges are very rough when you get them and they need a good sanding and polishing. I can't speak for the rakes because I tend to just SPP.

www.serepick.com has a pair of titanium bogotas for you, and you will be able to work locks much better than any kind of credit card size break out type of picks,

for those who don't agree, you need to try a competition to learn this.

Rai, preaching to some of these people is like trying to tell someone who wants to carry a lock pick set because they keep forgetting their keys to keep a spare key in their wallet.
