"V" notch in hooks

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

"V" notch in hooks

Postby Buzo » 10 Aug 2012 22:27

I recently purchsed an inexpensive pick set that included a hook with a "V" notched into it and I was wondering if there was a specific reason for this hook vs. The normal flat edge hook. I did something similar with my home made hooks and I do like the feel of the notch, but I was just wondering if it was desingned specifically for one type of lock ie: wafer locks.

I've heard that they are great for rotating the pins in Medeco locks.

I saw someone post a picture of one here, and thought it was a good idea - so I made one, but I honestly haven't used it much.

I thought it would help me 'stay on the pin', but I found that I didn't really need help with that. I can see how it might be useful for wafers though.

I would also think it's designed for "staying on the tumbler", but depending on the shape of the "V" that works well only with specific tumbler/profile shapes, like a wafer with a sharp edge, or a pin with a quite pointy tip in a straight thin profile that guides the hook exactly on the tip of the pin.

It helped me when I was first learning to spp but I find I can use a flat edge just as easily now. As for medeco, I don't have much experience with them. I've picked 3 different 5 pin medeco locks but I used a half diamond to push/pull until the sidebar set then spp'd them. Never tried the notched pick for them... I will have to try that...
