Postby Hojo » 10 Jul 2004 10:39

Howdy all im planing to make a 14 peice pick set out of hacksaw blades, and i was wondering if I could sell them to people? My work it pretty fine, I have very smooth and shiny picks, here is a pic of a set I made ages ago, the pick I make now a a bit better made...

i can just remember hojo's picks and they aren't too bad.

i have swapped materials again, after getting used to some nice hpc picks my uncle lent to me.

the steel used in hpc picks is almost like the hacksaw blades i found in a cheap shop, so i'm no-longer using plumbing snake.

again i wouldn't mind making a 14 - 20 pc set with falle clones if wanted either. :)

Make a duplicate of an HPC pick in spring steel (plumbing snake) and then in carbon steel (hacksaw blade)

Now, take each of the picks, and bend them, end to end. (I'm assuming you have a non handled HPC pick).

The hacksaw blade pick will snap.

one of may latest hacksaw picks - its nice and shinier now and was made my angle grinder.
the pic is blurry and the pick looks like it has a giant tang and a ball end ( thats all i can expect from a webcam)

it's actually a hook.
the hook height is 3mm
tang is 2mm
total pick length is 85mm

But now I'm trying to understand more about the plumbing snake and hacksaw blade comparison.

The hacksaw blade pick is stiffer but the penalty for stiffness is easier snappage (to coin a new word). The plumbing snake pick is more durable, but at the same time springier and bendier (another new word? yep, seems so :) ).

Perhaps there are advantages to both? The more durable springy pick might be better in awkward and confined keyways, but the siffer pick might offer better feel and control.

Does one have to be better than the other?

i have both, generall hacksaw are stiffer and plumbing snake is flexible

both have their uses, i now use plumbing snake for rakes and similar picks like hpc computer picks and hacksaw picks for single pin picks such as hooks and balls
