Question about handle types.

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Question about handle types.

Postby shatar » 26 Dec 2012 16:16

Ok I am basically ready to "Pull the trigger" and buy a set of picks somewhere in the 8 - 14 range
one of the final questions i have is regarding handles on the pick.

there are rippled handles like this set.

and plastic handles like this southord set.

and Basiclly the same southord set without the plastic handle

and there are also the color handled hpc picks.

because i am so new to this i was wondering what difference the handle of a pick makes.
is there one handle type that ie better than another. or is it basically just a this pick feels better in my hand in another?

Different handles will feel different in your hands, but the material the handle is made of will affect how well you can detect the feedback from the lock. In my experience, softer handles may feel nicer, but I can't feel much feedback, making picking a bit harder.

If you buy a set with plain metal handles like the 14 piece set, another option could be to buy some cheap heat-shrink tubing, and make your own soft touch handles.

I bought some Peterson's with the plastic molded handles and 1 with a molded rubber handle just for comparison. I really like the molded plastic handles. I have been using picks without handles for a while and they chew up your fingers if you get a little pick happy. I haven't tried any with heatshrink or plastidip but both options seem pretty popular.

If it's your first set of picks then I'd recommend ones with metal handles so you can feel more and grow accustomed.

You can coat the handles yourself if you feel the need for comfort, as like easy-e says - your fingers will get mashed.

Also if you're new to picking you'll most likely break a few anyway, so don't spend a fortune too soon, as it will be good to try out some different styles until you find your groove - most pickers have their favourite 1,2 or 3 picks the use religiously

one of few words 2octops :D

My first pickset was a 14 piece dino set but I love the storm lockpicks range - maybe I'm a sucker for their cool marketing
