Wizwazzle set or SouthOrd of equal $$

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Wizwazzle set or SouthOrd of equal $$

Postby andrewbisgnar » 14 Mar 2013 4:10

I just broke my bogota from my entry toolset, and figured it's time to go legit. I enjoy lock picking, and I'm really starting to get the feel for it. Raking, anyways. haha. But I've narrowed it down to two options. I'm looking at the Wizwazzle set from Sparrows and the 20 piece set from SouthOrd plus some extra tension wrenches/picks of whatever I happen to click to equal about the same cost. I guess I'm pretty heavy handed, but I already know I don't like the handle covers on the Wizwazzle set. Seems like the tensions wrenches in the Wizwazzle are nicer..I'm also looking into a 1000D cordura nylon pouch for these picks (I'm in the military). Anyways. To the point. If you were to suggest a set, which set would it be and why? It seems like there's more love for SouthOrd around here so I'm assuming those are pretty nice tools? Let's here it. Thanks!

I havnt heard much about sparrows picks too much. But looking at the pictures I imagine if your wanting to have these picks on your person the wizwazzle pick handles will only be more bulky. Plus you can make your own tension wrenches easy with a pair of jewelers pliers and spring steel.

Yeah, that's the truth. I just like to have as much of everything possible on-hand before I deploy...because when I'm deployed I don't really have the option to kick around making tension wrenches. Haha. And yeah, I think i'm going to settle on the SouthOrd. Seems like a really usable set for the money. And I see in the individual tension wrenches section, they carry the double ended wrenches that I do like...so It's a win. Thanks for your reply!

If you get that tension wrench from them I suggest getting 3-4 and modify all of them but one, give one teeth for those locks that let the tensor slip and your gonna have to file one down to fit into smaller locks. But other than that it works great. Much more durable design than other designs for forked tensors. I praise the southord line because of their durability and the small size. I havnt bent one yet. I highly recommend the peterson pry bar. for those locks where you need a lot of sensitivity in your tension wrench this one works like a dream.

Thanks for the tip! I'll start looking into that today. And yeah, I came across the Peterson pry bar last night. Seems like a good piece to have on hand. Lie I mentioned in the OP, I've a bit of a heavy handed guy. I'm rough on everything. Thanks a ton! Do you have a measurement for a southord lock pick? I need a length. I'm having a custom pouch sewn up for them for my upcoming deployment. The set hasn't arrive yet and I'm trying to get it done. ;D

Warrior (Andrew), I'm new here and still learning. Everyones milage will vary with any pick set. I have no personal experience with any of the SouthOrd or Sparrows offerings, but I do with Peterson Tools. OUTSTANDING tools. Take a look. They are a bit pricey but a quality product. I have had personal comms with the CEO and he is very responsive and stand behinds his product. Great employees as well.

I like the south ord picks with the stainless steal handles. They are very comfortable and just the right thickness.

The Wizwazzle set also comes with a case. The SouthOrd set looks really nice and professional, almost too much for
an aggressive picker. I would be REALLY pissed if I broke one of those picks, with their fancy handles. Also I have heard the tension wrenches that come with the Wizwazzle set are VERY good. This is all speculation as I haven't had the means to try either of these sets. However I hear really good things about sparrowslockpicks merchandise. If I were going to make a purchase, it would probably be sparrows. It just seems like a better deal. Another reason is that I think SouthOrd probably has plenty of business, and I like to help the little guy. Especially a little guy with a great reputation. This is just me though. I hope your SouthOrd set gives you plenty of action. :D

Sparrows makes a good quality ( made in Canada ) , With any set you may want to make additions or deductions . I'm no expert , but I've tried a fellow club member's set , they are nice .

Sparrows also embraces the sport lockpicking community .
