planetary gear tension tool

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Wow amazing! That is seriously cool.

Does it work as you expected? Can you post a video of you using it?

.. for the radio gears where do you get them?( radio shack ?)

I got the one I am currently using here.... http://www.midnightscience.com/catalog5.html ...
about the middle of the page , mine is 6 to 1 reduction. I think I have a 32 to 1 somewhere.
I gave about 10 bucks, and it is all metal and will oulast me more than likely.
Googleing revealed many more sites for other types made of other materials for cheap and not so cheap.
Sturdy and would save a lot of work, unless you just want to do it from scratch which I understand. :)

because the wheel bearing are made ( just locked in the inner seal that moves) theres alot of friction in it. so theres no feedback and its to big.but it does make small changes easy ( backing off a overset). its really was made from trash around the house. but i did it to see if the gears can be a high friction plastic(pill bottle caps with tape) instead of gears. so im thinking to make a new one from plastic rings ( maybe coated pvc pipe) and a more solid lock turning head) . i think it will work but it needs to be free moving. if you hold the ring and input ring at the same time its on reduction. i thought that was useful. its to big but i have got it to work a few time.if your sun and planets are the same its reduction is 4 to 1.i ll post more later

You could get little plastic gears from some modeling shop, it would make whole tension tool smaller, also you can put gearbox in the middle of tension tool handle. From what i imagine, to make it work properly and comfortably whole gearbox would have to be max 2 cm diameter.

I love this idea. ...ages ago i thought of using an adapted Socket wrench. As a tension tool. But the ratchet as a way of releasing a little wasn't effective. ...i know i wasn't in the ball park of your work. ...don't know if it'd help increase feedback. But i'd suggest that your gearing be attached to a 'standard' tension tool. Basically a slot cut thru your tool. With the standard thru it. When picking. Tension as normal. When you need to release. Hold via the gears. Release. ...just my two cents worth. As i said before i love this idea. If you can make it work with real feedback. Please let me know.

Horsefeathers. The point as i understand it. is as a tension tool that allows miniscule adjustment via the geared mechanism. To allow you to backoff a small amount to pick a spool pin..

or just get yourself a lighter thinner tension bar and practise

Is this the same concept as this round tension tool? http://www.southord.com/Lock-Picking-Tools/Tension-Tool-Circular-Spring-Loaded-CRT-2.html

I guess other than gears instead of springs.

Ive made circle ones before and liked them. this is just a idea to help on high tolerance and security pins.i practice all the time , just trying to make new ways . i plan on eventually making a higher grade one . i used a falle safe style to connect to the planet carrier.

i just got internet back for a short while. i have practice with every type turning tool that i have tools to make. ( feather, circle, top/bottom, normal both ways and different sizes. after seeing no gear reduction based turning tools, i first thought of planetary gears but other gears setup could work( just 2 gears
at the head of the tool) i just at the time dont have the capability to make it (im very broke and havnt figure out 3d designing yet) the whole point is to improve the control to a higher degree. also if it measured the amount of rotation it could help with finding true setting order by dropping order ( if you set a pin one degree then but then set another and it drops your first you would know the the angle it sets at and not just the pressure you feel because, setting order is based off the angle of the plug and clearance to push a pin to its next set ( or false set for serrated) and binding order just base off which pin has the most friction.( which works great with old quicksets)

I am liking the idea for this tool. To me tension is everything. Just as my two cents in the final version I would like to see spring loaded tensors so it can adjust to any lock. Keep it up. I would love one of these. Kickstarter?
