Modern High Security Locks, how to open them by steven hampt

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Modern High Security Locks, how to open them by steven hampton.....thoughts

i read it once and am reading it again. great book, lots of tech on all sorts of locks and bypassing and picking them. Medeco, Ruko, Kaba, Abus, Ace, Abloy, ASSA brands mentioned disected and tools and technique discussed. Any one else read this? i think its a good book to learn and get into HS cylinders.

I own a copy of this book. I found it informative and nice to read, it's cheap compared to other books.

Since its publication date is 2002, most of the locks are old now but there are very nice ideas for making tools and lots of diagrams,
I've seen it as a step up once you got the basics.

Due to previous experiences with its publisher I was prepared for the worst, so I was pleasurely surprised. If it was published by another editor I'd have considered it halfway between great and bad, though. :)

what modern high security locks have you opened with techniques or tools mentioned in this book?

As I recall having seen it he has a paragraph in there that asserts that you can open a medeco with a bent half diamond pick
has anyone succeeded in doing it this way?

Hampton to my mind makes assertions that he never backs up with any real information.

Basicly that book is just a cash cow that paladin press is milking, and the usable information is thin. there are many better sources and this forum is one of the best

Are you referring to that three pin alarm switch lock by medeco? I almost forgot about it, should dig up the book again.
In fact I said I was prepared for the worst being paladin press, but I was surprised as it wasn't that bad as I'd have expected.

Of course you can't compare a book, as good as it may be (this is not the case) with a multimedial pulsating network of sharp minds, as this forum is in its own league 8)

i have to agree alot of it was a stretch i thought, but i liked it more for the insight into high security cylinders. i can easily imagine, er.....KNOW that there are many indiviuals on this forum that have the skills to crack the locks mentioned in that book and someday in my locksmithing career hope to aquire the same skills. i have to say and agree with Mr gloves....this place is in a league all its own. as far as opening anything high security i opened only ACE cylinders mentioned in the book, have not tried the kabas, medecos, primus, etc quite yet, figured i will learn as much as i can about them before i ever earn advanced privilages and try to pick these locks.

Thankfully the internet and the many locksport groups around the world have made it more difficult for people like Hampton from peddling such useless books. There's better information online for free than what you can gather from the garbage sold by places like Paladin on lockpicking.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

Thank you all for your insights on my last lock picking book Modern High Security Locks. I have since provided photographs of these locks detailing my techniques. Paladin has yet to add these photos to the book, so I have created a website where they can be viewed - http://howpickalock.com/high_security_locks.htm
