Carbon Fiber Source

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Carbon Fiber Source

Postby cuttinedge1 » 18 May 2015 21:24

I saw a thread a while back about sources of titanium for pick making. I was wondering if anybody has bought carbon fiber for pick making or knows a source. I found this one http://www.acpsales.com/.030-x-36-x-24-CL4.html and I saw this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRIL8RTkj8o so I it can work. I think they might have to be slightly thicker than steel picks so maybe .030 or .035 but I am not really sure. If it is really expensive we could do a group buy.

I think You should concentrate your efforts elsewhere. Clumsy extra-thick plastic doesn't sound like a good recipe for lock picking tools

carbon fibre is not a good material for the pick itself.. while it's stronger per weight, it does not have a abbrasion resistance that steel does. you'd wear out the tip in no time..

you can use it to make the handles, but not the pick itself.. I use it for knife handles all the time..

Not just that, it is important to note that it has a high tensile strength and stiffness, but it isn't very flexible or hard. And it almost has a grain like wood, which would create planes of weakness all throughout your tool.

for knives yes.. not for picks.. my preference in order would be

1) Stabilized and dyed burl
2) Carbon fiber (Coloured.. red is nice)
3) Deer Horn
4) Micarta

I've also used the various materials for pens as well..
