please help with this impossible lock

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

please help with this impossible lock

Postby Joshua7392 » 11 May 2015 11:39

Its on an old glass and wooden cabinet. The lock itself has a metal interior and is set inside of the wood. It looks like there's a straight rod coming out of the middle of thee lock just to about the end of the metal. It has an indent on the bottom for the key to go into easily. And a smaller indent on the right hand side that won't allow a key to enter or exit from that angle. I don't have the key, but I know it looks kinda old school with a hole in the middle of the key to wrad around that rod inside the lock. Please help I only have household items to try going at it. I'm using 2 paperclips..

Unfortunately we have no way to tell if you have the legal right to access this locked container. A picture is worth a thousand words. If you could take a picture of the cabinet in question, showing the full object and what's around it, post it on imgur and post the link here. Then let us know why you're trying to access it without a key an we can see whether we can help you without violating our ethics.

Lol, easy? I've been working at this thing for 2 hours with paper clips. Could you be more specific as to what I need to do? I do have nails and such

In my experience, a paper clip will probably be too soft and bendy to over come the spring on the lever inside that lock. your family could just call a local locksmith or break the glass and then take the door to a glass shop and get a new piece of glass put in. I guess it all depends on how quickly you need to get in there.

just saw your reply.. lock picking is easy if you practice.. but its not like the movies where you stick a paper clip in and the door opens in 10 seconds. you in a hurry to get in?

And I feel like I've been hitting the actuator on the far left. But it doesn't seem to wanna move. Don't I need to rotate it 270 degrees?

If you google image search cabinet lock, you'll find what the keys look like and then you can make a key from something like a bike spoke or a nail and get in there and try to flick the mechanism open.

Here's what the keys normally look like, just try to make something like this

Bend a bike spoke, nail or something similar like this:

EDIT: I see Stainless has added a pic of a key.. great minds think alike!

And do most of those keys open most of the locks? Like, could I just buy a key that looks similar and it'll work? Or would it be a better idea to make one so I can change the shape when needed? And I'm not too much in a hurry, but I'm loving all the help you guys are giving!

Sounds like a good use for Ward type picks or a right angle pick from harbor freight.

Did you ever get it opened?

Hmm, probably not the best place, you're in Lock Picks right now, where folks discuss different lock pick sets and make their own picks.

Up in Got Beginner Questions would be a good place to start. Poke around, see if your question is already answered as many beginner questions are often the same question that comes up a lot, and if you don't find anything using Search or browsing manually, then feel free to start a topic and ask your question. photos of the picks you're using and the lock you're trying to pick are always helpful so we can give proper advice.

Take a look at the blue/white menu on the top left side of the web site or click this link to see all of the sub forums: http://lockpicking101.com/

Enjoy the forum,
