Even Cheap Picks Can Pay The Rent

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Even Cheap Picks Can Pay The Rent

Postby AngryHatter » 7 Mar 2018 17:19

I was working a lock and knew I had a stack not set, thought it might be two. But I was not sure.

For crepe & giggles I pulled out a really cheap pick...one with rivets bonding the "handle" and it was bent a bit to the left as well.

I could not get it in the lock past the third stack. I took it out and put my good pick to work and opened the lock in an instant.
The cheap pick gave me the feedback I needed.

And I was about to toss it.

By the way, how long do your picks last?
My every day set are worn on the right side of the blade. They last two years before I replace them.

I have some picks that I've used for 20+ years. YMMV

My usual go-to pick is a Majestic I bought in the mid-1990's.

Yep, Ive got a couple of Majestics from the same time period. They live on my desk and get used often. The diamond started out as the giant diamond pick, I lowered the angles to be closer to a hook in geometry. Great multipurpose pick, can rake and spp with it. The hook started out as a W rake if I remember right, I have never liked the W, and have always made them into hooks.
