DIY "Gem" short hook

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

DIY "Gem" short hook

Postby Peter Martin » 19 Jun 2020 22:59

This simple hook pick took longer than initially thought. The first pick was a misshapen and went into the trash. This one is better. Made from 1/4" wide drain snake (marked "Japan"). It is .025" thick.
I also used two pieces of the same stock to make the handles--and then heated it with a torch so I could drill 1/8" holes through all pieces. I used pop rivets to secure the handles, and then covered it with a piece of heat-shrink.
From stock to polishing the project took 1-1/2 hour.
I always seem to have a shortage of simple hook picks...
It's not beautiful, but my picks seem to do their job, which is all I ask.

Very good work! Sand and polish it and you will use it for years. My favorite picks were handmade. Most by me, some by others. There is great satisfaction in doing what you are doing. Keep it up!
