Working Area/Sizes of Keyways?

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

I have no idea on the size but would guess roughly 1/8"?

I have been wondering about making some curved picks tips from binder clips, the 2" ones are .015" thick (they also sell 2.4" ones, not sure if they're .015 too). Would/could that work? (I'm not looking forward to the dremel work)

If you don't have the Ilco Key Blank Directory, you must get. Never used the Dremel for Picks, Seems like it would be slow, don't know. Do know a Grinder works Fast and Good. Needle nose pliers can reduce wear on your fingers. New wheels have a sharper radius.
If you have wide Wiper Blades. Design your pick with a Sharpie, then grind the black away.
Still trying to figure a way to decode a picked lock. Lishi does couple now the are Pin Tumblers.
Before that, for Master, Kwikset, Schlage, and Master, I wanted to.use Depth Keys, but with no hump between. Slide it in, first pin could be decoded, then 50/50 chance of decoding pin 2. Any deeper cuts could also be decoded. Then Impression the rest. For a Master, it would mean the most you would have to Impression is 3 pins. Could help for the Most difficult Keyways as well.
Was also thinking of a hook, with a recess at the top..marks on the shaft could indicate which pin you're on. Then slide in .005" or what ever feelers needed for that Manufacturer, to Decode Pins, The're are some Keyways Lishi won't be able to do.
Also had a Thought of channeling a groove to the tip of the key space and curve up. Use a guitar string, and depending on how far wire was pushed in, would determine the cut. The reader could be Mechanically amplified to get an Accurate reading

I'm just not seeing why this is important. I buy all my picks from companies that have already taken these measurements into account, most likely...

Having read a bit more (and I will need to continue). It seems the "King & Queen" picks were generated similarly to what I am trying to do, I'm just looking to create picks considering known dimensions of the space(s) they'll work in. The same way I would measure a wall before buying a couch.

Things don't have to be essential to be important, they don't have to be seen as important to everyone. For me, I see the numbers as important.

I picked a lock last night that had been stumping me, a small half diamond worked easily, even my short hook was "too big" for that lock. Developing experience, finesse, feel, etc, will just take me time. I can learn the data, the numbers, today. With the numbers/dimensions I'd have known weeks ago that my "go to" hook could cause problems with that lock/bitting.

I suppose thats one of the big differences between me, a locksmith trying to do a job & someone who is a hobby picker and doesn't have any sort of time constraints. If I stop to wonder for too long my work will never get done
