Just got my first slimline set but...

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Just got my first slimline set but...

Postby Brick Jones » 15 Jul 2005 18:13

First post to the forum, Greetings everyone. Great place btw.
I am new to picking although had a majestic set for years and tinkered around with it.

So I finally broke down and ordered from the SO outlet, the MPXS-32 set.

Here is my question. How are you all using these slimlines without them cutting into your skin. I do not want to come across as though I am putting too much pressure on them, but as I hold them in the pencil position, I feel them cutting into my hand.

Also, the little double sided half diamond and rake, and pick and snake seem so small and flimsy I am almost unsure how to use it.

do any of you use that rubber coating that you can dip the handles into to help with this?

Also, not sure if there is any interest but I am happy to throw them on the scanner with some rulers and put the hi rez scans on my website for download. Just let me know.

If it's cutting into your hand, you are probobly applying too much tension. Applying too much tension will bind up the pins and it will require a lot more force to lift them, thus the cutting into your skin.

Hi Brick,

Do you mean the ones without the handles? If so I think the idea is that they are more sensitive and you can feel the pins better. I usually use the ones with the handles in preference to the others. Double ended picks are a pain I agree, I have used electricians heat shrink tubing on them to help stop them digging in.

If on the other hand you mean slim line picks with handles, I use them a lot and, even using them with my finger on the blade, they don't cut into me.

Possibly because they are slimline and move around in the lock a lot, subconsciously you are putting too much pressure on the blade in an effort to control them.

regards

Hmm. I am a little confused about the handles. They do not have an outer, or triple ply, handle. They are just one super thin single pick. you can see them on the right hand side of the picture in the link.

I see that they also do sell some slimlines with the handles, or at least what I am guessing you mean, the 3 ply type.http://www.southord.com/images/fullsize/C-500.jpg

either way, I am guessing that as a newbie, I am using too much pressure.

I had a similiar problem with my picks, now I just use a little plastic tubing where the pick rests in the "V" on my hand, you only need 1 piece and can slide it onto whatever pick your using.

Very interested. Please post the link.... properly. Seriously, I wouldn't mind seeing them. About the handles, I find that I sometimes suffer from the same thing (picks cutting into hands and fingers) and if you wrap a piece of cloth (any old fabric) around the part you're holding, voila, no more cuts. :)

Scanning them now..

Postby Brick Jones » 15 Jul 2005 19:43

I am scanning the pick set now and will take some digital pics as well.

I could not resist the temptation of playing with them a little though first. First 5 mins in and click, the master padlock was opened. It was a Master Lock No. 3 , if that means anything. All I know is that it seems to only have one pin that needs to be pushed in and it opens.

I decided to try the other picks on it since I knew the pin to hit. This hobby, or at least a hobby for me, is much like the Rubix Cube was, except I can watch tv and do this one. :D
