When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Now I've used all sorts of materials to create my home made lockpicks, saw blades, brick strap, any flat metal. You name it I've probably tried it, but as I was working on my car the other day I realized something. I took my Spark Plug Feeler Gauge, and saw how nice the blades and metal were. So I put it to mind and went out and bought a new one and i created picks out of the blades, not only is it portable but u can make numerous lockpicks out the bales. I have one with about 30 different picks. It resembles a larger version of the jackknife Lockpick set. I just would like to know if any one has tried this also. It may not work for everyone but please give me feedback. I haven't been back to the site in a few months and I'm getting started again.

Hi,
Using spark plug feeler gauge has both benefits and deficits for lockpicks. Some of the benefits you already mentioned, it holds many picks, it's a nice stainless steel, and it is portable, much like a jack knife.
Some problems are that some pieces of metal are too thin to form a decent pick, and that the grip on any individual pick is difficult because it is a jack knife type tool.
I made a great set of URL HPC Computer Generated Pick clones with this tool that work beautifuly because you don't need as refined of a grip on this kind of tool as you would with a standard lockpick. I think any sort of "jiggler" tool would be ideal for spark plug feeler gauge.
Post some pictures of your pick!

hi
u tried using some old reading glasses yet ?? I have made some lockpicks from them in the past it was easy to do, didn’t take long and they worked pretty good.
Pull the plastic/rubber bit off that goes around ur ear, it shuld now be long and thin that’s the bit that goes into the lock, U can bend this into any pick u want.
The other end that is nr the glass just screws off ( breaks off ) and is just the right size for the handle.

scampdog:
There are various hosting sites, such as imageshack.us or pictiger.com where you can host your images. I think both of those will even give you code to post to the forum to display your images. If not, you can use the URL and IMG tags (or click the buttons that automatically open the tags for you, located near the Subject bar.
Hope that helps! Look forward to seeing the pics.

I thought of using these myself, I think its a good idea only that it might be best to buy two sets and discard the thinner gauges.

While shopping in the local B rated tool store I notices these 6" long stainless steel rulers on sale. I thought that $.50 each was cheap so I decided to try them out as pick material. They worked well as auto jigglers, but the thing I really liked wsa the pocket clips were ready made padlock shims, just trim the end.

I would have thought that the pocket clip would be a bit thick for a shim.

Looks like you are right. I tried the pocket clip shim on a handy padlock and it worked well, that's when I posted, but after useing it on several different ones I had about a 50 % success rate. Perhaps the clips will make a good tension wrench.

This was made about 3 years ago I knew a lot less then and I didn't have good templates to use. I been looking for a spark plug feeler that has the long blades like the old one I used, the new feelers seem too small for me I have big hands.
