When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Slimline picks against US style picks comparrison

Postby Shrub » 28 Jul 2006 10:05

A big thanks goes out to Fah_Cue and bpc293 for the pics,

Ive edited them together in pairs so you can see the comparrison, Fah_Cue i have to say your picks are way out of shape lol

bpc only sent me 4 picks so ive had to just work with them and lack of interest from elsewhere means this is all we have but its omthing ive not seen done as far as i can remember and i think it will help mainly the noobs on seeing what the actual differance is,

Maybe this will spur some of you others to do such things,

The dark picks are from Fah_Cue with the lighter ones being from bpc, the dark ones are the slim lines with the light ones being the US size,

All picks are South Ord,

Ouch, some of those slimlines are bent :( :(

Thats a cool comparison Shrub. Besides the fact that the slimlines would seem to bend easier, it doesn't look like there's much difference between them.

It would be cool to see a comparison between two different brands(e.g southord and HPC) to see if the hooks, diamonds, sankes, etc. are the same size.

I really think I should buy a real pickset soon. :o :o

But, Im kinda strapped for cash, i just bought 5 schlages, a medeco, and a Sargent SFIC (should be a fun Pick........). With payment pening for ~100 keyless rim and mortise cylinders.

i really think that most of the picks out there need to be sanded when you get them. so why get the slims. smooth down the regulars and you got slims. i do have slims every time i buy something i always get one or two single picks.

Shrub - thanks for the work on the pic, its a great comparison with the scale. I appreciate pics with a scale inside it. Makes copying picks easier. For slimline pics I have only 1 factory manufactured pic - is a small rake, HPC looks sorta like the Pick that is in the lp101 logo - the tip that is, not the entire beast. Its a great pic and I am making some up (diamonds and halfs, rakes etc) to match this HPC single I have.

I still would like to purchase and entire set of south ords - they seem to be inexpensive, and slimlines are the way I want to go.

Beware the scam!
You can buy them from lockpicks.com if you really want some. But if you're just fishing for financial details you might have to go elsewhere.. people here seem fairly security concious :P

I have to say I have had no bending trouble with the SO slimline picks, none at all. It's possibly the consequence of applying too much picking pressure...

Shrub, isn't there also a thickness difference between standard and slimline?

Matt Blaze measured LAB, Rytan, and Peterson picks at 0.025 inches thick. http://www.crypto.com/photos/misc/picks/

I have a SouthOrd short hook, but my calipers are at work and I won't have them until tomorrow. I would imagine that SO would follow suit with the other major players in the market though...

On a side note, I ordered the Peterson Gem, Reach, Hook, and Slender Gem yesterday. I'm gonna wet my pants I'm so excited...

sorry for the double post, but..

looking at your (awesome) picture Shrub, the slimline short hook looks a lot more like the long hook.

I think this is their short hook.. hrm... this has got me thinking.

brb in a new thread

aye, your slimline hook is a long hook, not a short hook, i know as i have both the SO short hooks, reg and slim.

as for thickness, my slim hook is only a hair thinner it looks like (i dont have any fancy calipers, but eyeballing it seems to work for me.)

although, anyone who has used both the reg and slim picks, can tell you the difference in feeling with them. the regs feel strong and ready to eat someone, while the slims feel, not flimsy, but a tool for a practiced hand that can use finesse and open a lock like some sort of picking master.

i prefer slims the feed back is a lot better

and if you glue the handles together you can make some
neat double ended falle style picks!

Or you can stop being a stingy tight-arse and just by a set of Falle picks. :P

Only ever used slimline picks, but find them to be fine. I haven't bent a pick yet, and still use 'em now and again. :)
