how do u make padlock shims out of measuring tape, ive tryed floppy disks, coke cans, so my last hope is measuring tape, please help me

Actually, uh, wouldn't your last resort be buying them?

I've tried soda cans, disk covers, measuring tape, half a dozen other things, and commercial shims, and I still couldn't get it to work, so I probably shouldn't be answering your questions.

I'd love to hear from someone who's actually gotten improvised shims to work.

Hi, I would suggest you get a pick and file it to a sharp point. I have not used it, but have read a few text that recommends it.

This thread has been discussed so many times before. I would like to ask in the future you see if there are any other threads that discuss the same topic before posting a new one. Unfortunately I do not see too many of the previous ones being too helpful.

Like always the suggestions of others like floppy disks and coke cans might work for some and might not work for others. It depends on the floppy disks you use they all would be slightly different. Also with a coke can have you tried folding it over to give more strengh? Like to say again, I have never tried myself as I like picking and have no reason to defeat.

I would suggest you buy padlock shims, they are not that expensive. Keep in mind even purchased padlock shims only work on a limited number of padlocks (large gap, have the defect).

Feeler gague stock may also be a possibility. I dont really know, because I don't shim padlocks.

Chucklz hit it on the head. I've used .005 and smaller feeler gauges on padlocks when I didn't have any luck picking them and someone has borrowed the bolt cutters.

Hello all.

I've had numerous successes with making shims out of floppies.

However, I apply a technique that a bit different from what I've seen on the h2k2 videos. On the video, he places the shim in then turns it to open the lock. I actually position the shim as high on top of where it suppose to go then push down instead of putting it anywhere then twisting. I also sort of push down the handle of the lock and give it a tiny "pumping" motion which helps relieve pressure on the spring mechanism.

Over all, about 3-5 minutes to make a makeshift shim (or shimmy as I like to call them).

i had a old combination padlock, i cant remember the number but its so cheap, it is shimable(that a word ?) with a floppy disk plate thingy, takes about 5 secondes, i tried the same thing on other locks, but the spring that keeps the latch thing in place is too tight, so the shim doesnt lift it, and some of the locks have gaps on both sides so you will have to use 2 shims at same time

Shimming is when you take a thin piece of metal and put it around the hasp in the lock and you turn it and it will trip a latch or something and open.

not ripping into ya or anything Nooby, but you make padlock shimming sound like a 'guess game' where just play around in the lock, and hopefully flick a latch and the lock wil open. This is not the case, as it is a well known form of bypassing padlocks. This is what my interpretation of shimming is (sorry about crap drawing but you get the idea)

The red shows the locking mechanism that slots into the latch part on the locking shackle.

The blue shows the shim in place.

In the 2nd situation, the shackle is no longer held in 'locked' position, and pops open.

Soda can shims are real easy to make. Probably because when you trie d to make one of a soda can You cut it to sharp instead of a rounded tip. And also depending on the lock that you want to shim because there are only limited locks that can be shimmed.
