DIY TDS v3 20070520 Drafts of pick tools

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

DIY TDS v3 20070520 Drafts of pick tools

Postby CompFX » 19 May 2007 21:55

This is a book that RedRavenSC and I have been working on for awhile now. We figured it was time for its first public release. Please let us know what you think.

This is the book to have for all the DIY'ers out there. The book contains drafts of picks, bumpkeys, bypass tools, auto lockout tools, tension wrenches, and other tools as well. If you ever wanted to know exactly what commercial tools dimensions were, well here it is.

This is the basic version of our book. It has been stripped of all the info that would be considered 'advanced info only'. The advanced forum will have the standard version.

Keep in mind that this is the first release. There are many more to come. Please let us know if there is anything you would like to see added to the book. We currently have more to add to the book, but we are anxious to get feed back and see if we are heading in the right direction. If anyone has any problems reading these, or finds errors, please let us know right away so they may be fixed in the next release.

I had a funny code when I downloaded 8)

The work you've put into this looks promising, I'll hope to see more of this someday :)

:D

As a remark for the OP: There is an error in the document. On the page where you teach what "R" means:
The radius is the distance across the circle.

Isn't that the diameter? Radius is half of that I believe :)

im impressed. thats very very cool. one thing that came to mind was the dragon tool. doesn't S Hampton own this design? not that im not pleased to have all the sizes here. that may be my first attempt at a home made tension wrench.

All the best

@ Jakko, yes, radius is half the circle. Thank you for pointing that out. That funny code you had to enter is to keep people from hacking RS and using automated download scripts.

@ JackNco, Im not sure. I know he owns the idea; which he was credited for in the S.A.C of the book. And if this is an issue, then the whole book would also fall under the same dilemma as HPC owns the pick designs. Also, HPC and or Bumpkey.us owns the bump key designs as these were sources for the information collected. And I dont know how many different manufactures were used when we made the automotive section of the book. The auto tools I have are pushing 10 years old and I do not remember who made them. And then would come the issue of giving credit to the original maker of the pop can padlock shim.

We are not trying to embark on any copyright issues here, we just wanted to make a book of collected information for everyone to use when making home brew tools.

I think I know how to fix the dragon tool issue. hopefully it will be fixed in the edition of our book. Then there should be no copyright problems.

@ UWS, You like the juggling penguin... I like the fact that he has 19 tabs open and 18 starting with L which I can only assume is LP101.

Thank you all for the input.

There will be a minor update to the book in the next few days. I have fixed all the spelling errors pointed out and revamped some of the images. This is a continual work in progress and will have numerous irregular updates as things get added or updated, or removed.

I like the way the templates are measured in so many dimensions. I did have a question about the .033 inch thickness, the only picks I own over .030 are jigglers.

Very nice work. I have a couple of suggestions - it would be nice if each template had a name or some way to refer to it, so we could say 'everyone should have a rake like the R5 from DIYTDS' or whatever.
You have a template for the dragon wrench, you could also include templates and measurements for the Peterson Flat wrenches since they lend themselves to templating (and people love them as tools.)

@ CVS, that should have read .020, that has been fixed for the next update.

@ Gordon - Thank you for the suggestions. We'll see what we can do.

Templates

Postby redravensc1 » 23 May 2007 22:14

I am working on some more templates for the tension wrenches. I think I am going to add a couple more that I was thinking about.

Feather wrench and a weighted wrench. I am working on the designs now. The weight one, would work with different weights. Since I do a lot of fishing, I thought the bell shaped weight, in different sizes, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and 1 once weights might work well. You would be able to attach them to the wrench so as you pick, in either direction, it should work fine.

Comments please!

I will submit them to CompFX to add to the manual.

Any suggestions on what else you might like to see in the manual?

Hey

I think HPC do a weighted tension wrench. instead of just adding and removing weights though on this you slide them up and down to simulate adding or removing weights. but i personally think i would effect my (and this is me not everyone) picking negatively. especially when dealing with spools pins.

All the best
