When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Keyring picksets, Which do you prefer

Postby GutterClown » 19 Jul 2007 7:51

I've noticed a few types of jackknife picksets around, such as:

Southern Specialties "Folding Pocket Pickset"

SouthOrd "Jackknife"

HPC "Jackknife pickset"

Any preferance? I'm just wondering if they're useful on the job, or mainly a gimmick \ novelty.

Personally, I'm looking at the southern specialties one, as they're releasing bogota picks for it via phone order.

Your easy answer is non of the above, they are all crap and useless unless you can already pick well they are just a gimmick and if you can pick well they are even more of a gimick,

Youve missed an important option from the poll and thats an option to vote for none of the above by means of either none of them or you wish not to vote, either way you have to vote for one of your choices if you want to vote and thats not right :P

We do not allow hot linked images so ive turned them to links,

I'm personally a fan of standard laminated HPC short hooks, so you're preaching to the converted.

But I notice that you claim they are all novelties and crap, yet you didn't actually vote that you'd used any.

Speculation?

Beyond this being a waste of time and space... as there are litterally dozens of threads on the subject of these novelty junk wads....

well i've used the southord one and it was a rattly piece of shite with poor feed back and no real use....

and so I cannot vote as it would also imply that I liked any of them the most.

but hey maybe there the thing made just for you as well I really dislike HPC picks.

I have used all of those or rather tried them and many more including home made ones and none of them are a touch on separate individual picks,

Im not picking bits at you here dont get me wrong but i have to ask why the interest to the point of making a poll if your converted? not that a conversion needs to be done unless you started on them

Well I have tried others, but I will not comment or vote on the choices you have given. I made my own as well so i'll stick to that one.

I own the "Southern Specialties" one and I hold a very high opinion of it as far as jackknives go. Shrub is entirely correct that none of them are of any use if you are not already an experienced picker.

well I will not vote yet add my 2 cents.

I belive thatif you have it on your keyring, and need something it's okay.

However, they are junk. I have personally not tried, but since i never rake and only ever use hook unless a rake is manditory.

There okay jsut to have i suppose but nothing i would pay for.

Curiosity. who better to ask about a certain type of pick, than a community devoted to nothing else but lockpicking.

I figured they wouldn't be overly good, definatly not good enough as a main go-to pickset. I'm just curious as to weither they're worth just having as an emergancy kit. I'd load it out with the standard kit (short hook, double ball, extractor, bogota, saw and an old broken pick just as a feeler \ spike)

Buddy I hate to break it to you...but double balls are generally standard issue.

Standard issue is

hook
snake
small diamond
extractor
ball

why? I don't know, I would have

hook
snake
small diamond
w rake
L rake

I've used a Dyno Kwik Pick and didn't really like it. I got a normal Majestic pick set soon afterwards and since then I have not once touched my Dyno pick.

The handle is just way too big, kind of like using a screwdriver with a handle the size of a basketball so I assume it's the same way with other similar pick tools.

So yeah, I vote none if thats ok.

I'll buy a jackknife set when Raimundo starts making them with his bogata rakes.
