What is this (I'm noob question)

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

What is this (I'm noob question)

What is this and where may it be used? I found this in the Homebrew thread.

"Plug Spinner"

When you've picked a lock in the wrong direction, this device will allow you to spin the plug quickly enough that the driver pins won't re-enter the plug as it spins past.

I've ran into needing one only once (been picking a few years now) but I just locked the lock and picked it in the other direction.

dopp - it happens, more need for a locksmith than a hobbyist, of course. You can replicate the effect with a twist tension wrench and a rubber band, works pretty well. Try it on your own, expect your tension wrench to go flying the first couple of times, but you'll figure it out :)

Don't put an eye out!

I'll have to try that one sometime, care to elaborate on the procedure a little?

Make sure you use a tension wrench with a half-twist, grab a rubber band and you'll get the hang of it before long. ;) It's fun to experiment!

(there are videos on this site, plus a couple of threads, but really, just try it, you'll figure it out)

My plug spinner was made by Capt hook and is really rather original.
he took a Joe Porper tip burnisher http://www.porper.com/index.cfm?CFID=1919246&CFTOKEN=95a657be5efafd17-2223C776-20ED-7D0A-C086DBA663C11877&fuseaction=Catalog.Product&displayView=closeup&productID=59

And he cut a small notch in the bottom of it. He then took a tension wrench and drilled a hole through the 90' bend in it. he put a spring through the tension wrench and then put it into the tip bunisher. The bottom of the spring was put into the notch cut into the tip burnisher and then wrapped with electrical tape to hold it in place.

.....So yeah I guess it's kinda hard to explain :) Maybe once I get a camera (which I'm going to buy specificaly for this site  ) I'll put up some pics of it.
*witty lock-related comment here!*

Its also used on european locks. On some locks , the cilinder has to turn twice for the bolt to retract fully. The plug spinner prevents you from having to pick the lock again.

Not that I'll be in Europe anytime soon, but that is a great piece of info to know.

Thanks,

+1, actually all locks in my country (greece) have to turn twice for the bolt to retract fully.

(I got to get one of those someday... )
