Hmm.... Take a look at your screen- if you travel north a bit you come to a sign that reads "Search." I would suggest you take that road.

you need to have a great deal of magic to open most locks with paperclips

Well, in the theroy side of things, the same as a pick, basically you bend the paperclip into a hook or something...thats all it is...just a wire like pick and you dont need magic, you need patience and hope your makeshift pick is strong and wont bend when lifting pins...

well you need a vat of jelly, a roll of duck tape and a flamethrower... wait no errr just ignore that
hojo's right, but you need to either be verry lucky, verry verry patient or be skilled with the use of paperclip picking
my personal sergestion is , dont bother
If it doesn't seem to make sence, take a minuite to look at who said it... do you still want to know?

Yo, who gives a crap? Picking a lock with a paperclip is like eating spaghetti by sucking it into your mouth with a straw, it takes too much time, keeps getting stuck, and makes you turn blue in the face trying to do it, unless you are locked in the supply closet of Copy Max, you can do a lot better than paperclips, "yo."

paper clips in my opinion are only good for losers who think they can pick locks with one tool.. amazingly i have seen losers like that, but again hojo is correct, paperclips are great for makeshift tools when you lock your proper tools in your house and dont have a key.
i find paper clips work well on wafer locks, due to the small amount of spring force on the wafers, its easy for the paper clip to lift them up, but on some inline locks, the spring force si to great to use paperclips.

Look around the site for homemade picks. You will find many "better" alternatives.

That's ok. I am waiting on my shipment of picks, so I bought a padlock, found a wiper blade, and a paperclip.
24 hours later, I can pick the padlock within 10 seconds, often times in 1 swipe. (I'm using the raking method)
I feel your pain bro, literally. My right pointer finger is all sore from holding the paperclip so much. I can't wait until my picks come.
My buddy had some "home made" picks. I don't think they were very good, but worked. They were really big, and didn't like to fit into many of the keyholes. He said they were made out of bicycle spokes that he pounded with a hammer after heating. I managed to start his moped with them though. Took me about 5 minutes of serious raking.
I'm looking forward to learning more. I've had a lot of fun so far, and would like to learn more, so I can have more (legal) fun.

I would very strongly suggest practicing with paper clips. For that matter, go out of your way to try different things, even stupid things.
The harder you work to generate new failures, the more complete your understanding will be.
Also, it pays off if you ever have to open something without your tools.
Personally, I learned tension by working with paper clips (bend it into a V shape, then cross it over and squeeze the loop down. Bend the arms out and you have a nice T handle tension wrench with a decent spring feel).
You also learn a light touch on the pins when your pick bends every time you get excited.
